In Minamata, Japan, a chemical plant discharged methylmercury int the bay. Eating fish and shellfish contaminated wsith the discharge caused Minamata disease (MD) a "chronic neurologica disease. . . . To date [1985], 2578 people go throughout Japan have officially been verified to have MD." - Internation Journal fo Epidemology.
