What is a conspiracy theory? A conspiracy theory is a claim that sinister and powerful groupd have secretly plotted to cause a singnificant or tragic event. 

Why are they dangerous?  Conspiracy theories can undermine trust in legitamate sources of information, ans some can cause people to reject health or safety advice. Such theories can promote prejudice and violenceagainst th group thought to be involved in the conspiracy.

Why are theu so popular?  Conspiracy theories increased in popularlity during "periods of widespread anxiety, uncertainty, or hardship," states the Encyclopedia Britiannica. such as "during  and wars and economic depressions and in the aftermath of natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes, and pandemics" At such unsettling times, people accept conspiracy theories because these theories validate what they believe to help them yo understand why bad thing happen.
