A Noteworthy Alliance
At a joint press conference with Prime Minister David Cameron of the Unted Kingdom, Barack Obama of the United States affirmed in July 2010: "We can never say it enough. The United States and the United Kingdom enjoy a truly special relationship. We celebrate a common heritage. We cherish common values. . . . Above all, our alliance thrives because it advances our common interests. . . . When the United States and the United Kingdom stand together, our people around the world-are more secure and they are prosperous. In short, the United States has no closer ally and no stronger partner than Great Britain.
However, the first world war (1914-1918) moved Britain to embark on a special relationship with the United States, a previous colony. The result? The British Empire gave way to the Anglo-American alliance, in many respects a dual English-speaking world power that has lasted until the present.
