"Be Vigilant: - Conclusion of THE AGE OF TURBULENCE BEGAN

Greenspan recalled from his student days a statement by Economics Professor Benjamin  M. Anderson (1886-1949)  "Those who have an adult's recollection  and an adult's understanding of the world which preceded World War I look back  upon it with a great nostalgia.  There was a sense of security then which has never since existed." - Economics and the Public Welfare.

A similar conclusion is reached in the volume A World Undone, by G.J. Meyer, published in 2006. We read: "Historic events are often said to have changed everything.' In the case of the Great War  (1914-1918) this is, for once, true. The war really did change everything not just borders, not just governments and fate of nations, but the way people have seen the world and themselves ever since. It became a kind of hole in time, leaving the postwar world permanently disconnected from everything that had come before."

"Be Vigilant" - THE AGE OF TURBULENCE BEGAN

The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World is the title of a 2007 book by Alan Greenspan.  For almost 20 years, he was chairman of the United States Federal Reserve Board, which oversees the entire banking system. Greenspan highlights the marked contrast between the world situation before 1914 and what followed:

"By all contemporaneous accounts, the world prior to 1914 seemed to be moving irreversibly toward higher levels of civility and civilization; human society seemed perfectible.  The nineteenth century had brought an end to the wretched slave trade. Dehumanizing violence seemed on the decline. . . . The pace of global invention had advanced throughout the nineteenth century, bringing railroads, the telephone, the electric light, cinema, the motor care, and household conveniences to numerous to mention.  Medical science, improved nutrition, and the mass distribution of potable water had elevated the live expectancy . . . The sense of the irreversibility of such progress was universal.

But . . . "World War I was more devastating to civility and civilization than the physically far more destructive World War II: the earlier conflict destroyed an idea.  I cannot erase the thought of those World War I years, when the future of mankind appeared unencumbered and without limit. Today our outlook is starkly different from a century ago but perhaps a bit ore consonant with reality. Will terror, globlal warning, or resurgent populism do to the current  of life-advance globalization  what World War I did to the previous one? No one can be confident of the answer.

"Be Vigilant" - How We Should Be Affected

How should knowing that the end of this wicked system is rapidly approaching affect us?   The apostle Peter wrote: "Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in holy acts of conduct and deeds of godly devotion!" (2 Peter 3:11) Those words emphasize the need to keep close watch to make sure that our conduct is in harmony with God's requirements and that our life includes works of God'y devotion, reflecting our love for Jehovah.  Such deeds include doing our utmost in preaching the good news of the Kingdom before the end comes. Peter also wrote: "The end of all things has drawn close. . . Be vigilant with a view to prayers." (1 Peter 4:7) We draw close to Jehovah and show our love for him by constantly going to him in prayer, asking him to give us guidance by means of his holy spirit and his worldwide congregation.

In these perilous times, we need to adhere closely to the counsel of God's Word: "Keep strict watch that how you walk is not as unwise but as wise persons, buying out the opportune time for yourselves, because the days are wicked." (Ephesians 5:15, 16)  Wickedness is now more abundant than in any other time in history.  Satan has devised  many things to prevent people from doing Jehovah's will or simply to distract them.  As God's servants, we know this, and we do not want to allow anything to undermine our loyalty to God. We also know what is shortly going to take place and we put our confidence in Jehovah and his purposes. - Read 1 JOHN 2:15-17.

There will come to pass the marvelous promise that God has made to restore the dead to life, for "there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous." (Acts 24:15) Notice how emphatic that promise is:  "There is going to be a  resurrection"!  There is no doubt about it, for Jehovah has given his word!  Isaiah 26:19  promises:  "Your dead ones will live. . . .Awake and cry out joyfully,  you residents in the dust! . . . The earth itself will let even those impotent in death drop in birth." Those words had an initial fulfillment with the restoration of God's ancient people to their homeland, giving us confidence in the coming literal fulfillment in the new world. What great joy there will be as resurrected ones are reunited with their loved ones! Yes, the end of Satan's world is near, and a new world of God's making is at hand. How vital it is that we remain vigilant!

"Be Vigilant" - Conclusion of "The Great Tribulation"

It will be a great shock for people to see false religion destroyed. Bible prophecy shows that even some of "the kings of the earth" are going to declare regarding that destruction: "Too gad, too bad, . . . because in one hour your judgment has arrived.!"  (Revelation 18:9, 10, 16, 19) The Bible's use of the words "one hour" shows that this event will take place rather swiftly.

We understand that some time after false religion has been destroyed, there will be an attack on Jehovah's servants, who have been proclaiming his judgment messages.  (Ezekiel 38:14-16) When that attack begins, the attackers will have to confront Jehovah, who promises to protect his faithful people.  Jehovah declares: "In my ardor, in the fire of my fury, I shall have to speak. . . . And they will have to know that I am Jehovah." (Read Ezekiel 38:18-23) God states in his Word: "He that is touching you  [his faithful servants] is touching my eyeball." (Zachariah 2:8) So when his enemies begin their global assault on his servants, Jehovah will respond. He will move into action, which will lead to the final phase of the great tribulation-Its Armageddon climax.  Under Christ's command, powerful angelic forces will execute judgments against Satan's world.

"Be Vigilant" -"The Great Tribulation"

The end of this wicked system of things will come in what is called "the great tribulation." (Revelation 7:14)  The Bible does not tell us how long that will last, but Jesus said: "There will be great tribulation such as not occurred since the world's beginning until now, no, nor will occur again." (Matthew 24:21)  When we consider the tribulation that this world has already experienced, such as World War II when we estimated 50 to 60 million lives were lost, the coming great tribulation will be very severe indeed. It will reach its climax in the battle of Armageddon.  That is when Jehovah will unleash his executional forces to destroy ever vestige of Satan's earthly system. - REVELATION 16:14.

Bible prophecy does not give a date for the first phase of the great tribulation to begin, though it does tell us what extraordinary event will signal its start. That event is the destruction of all false religion by political powers. In Bible prophecies found in Revelation chapter 17 and 18, false religion is likened to a harlot who has had immoral intercourse with the political systems of the earth. Revelation 17:16 shows that the time will soon come when these political elements "will hate the harlot and will make her devastated and naked, and will eat her fleshly parts and will completely burn her with fire."

When the time comes for that to happen, God will "put it into their  (the political rulers') hearts to carry out his thought" to destroy all false religion.  (Revelation 17:17) So this destruction can be said to come from God. It is his judgment against hypocritical religion that for so long has taught doctrines contrary to God's will and that has persecuted his servants. The world in general does not anticipate this coming destruction of false religion.  But Jehovah's faithful servants do. And throughout these last days, they have been telling people about it.

"Be Vigilant" - An Earth-Wide Work

The work that Jehovah's servants are told to do was foretold as part of the composite sign indicating that we are in the last days of this present system of things.  Jesus described this global work when he enumerated various signs  that would happen in the time of the end.  Included in his prophecy was this meaningful statement: "This good news will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come." - MATTHEW 24:14.

Think of some facts related to the detail of Jesus' prophecy. The number of people proclaiming the good news was very small when the last days began in 1914.  By now that number has grown to huge proportions.  There are more than 7,000,000 Witnesses of Jehovah preaching throughout  the earth, organized into more than 100,000 congregations. An additional 10,000,000 people gathered with Jehovah's Witnesses in 2008 on the occasion of Memorial of Christ's death.  That was a significant increase in attendance over the preceding year.

What a mighty witnesses about God's Kingdom being given in all the nations before this system of things." (2 Corinthians 4:4) All political, religious, and commercial elements of this world as well as its propaganda channels are being influenced by him.  What, then, accounts for the amazing success of the witness work? It has to be Jehovah's backing. Thus, the Kingdom-preaching work proceeds marvelously despite Satan's attempts to stop it.

The success of the Kingdom-preaching work and the growth and spiritual prosperity of  Jehovah people can be described as a miracle. Without God's support, which includes his guidance and protection of his people, the preaching work would not be possible.  (Read Matthew 19:26.)  We can be sure that God's holy spirit working on the hearts of vigilant people who are willing to serve. this preaching work will be carried on to a successful conclusion , "and then the end will come." That time is rapidly approaching.

"Be Vigilant" - Be Vigilant in the Last Days

The apostle Peter wrote:  "The end of all things has drawn close.  Be sound in minds, therefore, and be vigilant with a view to  prayers." (1 Peter 4:7) Jesus'
followers would need to be vigilant and watchful of world events indicating that he was present in Kingdom power. And their vigilance would take on greater urgency as the end of the present wicked system of things approached.  Jesus told his disciples: "Keep on the watch, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming [to executed judgment on Satan's world]." - MARK 13:35, 36.

People in general are under Satan's domination, and they have not be watchful as to the meaning of world events.  They do not discern Christ's presence in the Kingdom power.  But Christ's true followers have been vigilant and have discerned the real meaning of what has happened the past century.  Since 1925, Jehovah's Witnesses have recognized that World War 1 and the events that followed amount to sure evidence that Christ's presence  in heavenly Kingdom power began in 1914. Thus, the last days of this wicked system of things under Satan had started.  Many observant people, though not knowing the meaning, recognized the dramatic difference between the period before World War 1 and the period since.

For nearly a century now, horrendous events taking place around the world testify that we are living in the last days.  There is very little time left before Jehovah  gives Christ the command to lead powerful angelic forces against Satan's world. (Revelation 19:11-21) True Christians are told to keep on the watch. Hence, it is urgent to continue to do that as we anticipate this system's end. (Matthew 24:42) We must remain watchful, and under Christ's direction, we must accomplish a specific work throughout the entire earth.

"Be Vigilant"

"The end of all things has drawn close. . . .Be vigilant with a view to prayers." - 1 PETER 4:7.

WHEN Jesus Christ was on earth, the theme of his teaching was God's Kingdom .  By means of that Kingdom, Jehovah will vindicated his universal sovereignty and sanctify his name.  Thus, Jesus taught his disciples to pray to God:"Please let Jehovah God be sanctified, let his Kingdom come and his will be done on earth has it is in heaven." (Matthew 4:17; 6:9, 10)That Kingdom government is very shortly going to bring an end to Satan's world and then supervise the doing of God's will throughout the earth. As Daniel foretold, God's Kingdom "will crush and put an end to all these [present-day] kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite." - DANIEL 2:44.

Because the coming of God's Kingdom was of great importance to Jesus' followers, they asked him: "What will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?" (Matthew 24:3)  A visible sign   would be provided in view of the fact that Christ's presence in Kingdom power  would invisible  to those on earth.  That sign would be composed of various features foretold in the Scriptures. Accordingly, Jesus' followers alive at that time could discern that he had begun ruling in heaven.  It would also mark the beginning of the period of time known in the Bible as "the last days" of the wicked system that now dominates the earth. - 2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5, 13; MATTHEW 24:7-14.

Jesus' Life and Ministry/ Conclusion of The Wise and Foolish Virgins

"While the foolish virgins were going off to buy [oil], the bridegroom arrived, and the virgins that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. Afterwards, the rest of the virgins also came, saying, "Sir, sir, open to us? in answer he said, 'I tell you the truth, I do not know you."

After Christ arrived in his heavenly Kingdom, the discreet virgin class of true anointed Christians awoke in their  privilege of shedding light in this bedarkened world in praise of the returned Bridegroom.  But those pictured by the foolish virgins were unprepared to provide this welcoming praise. So when the time comes, Christ does not open the door to the marriage feast in heaven to them.  He leaves them outside in the blackness of the world's deepest night, to perish with all other  workers of lawlessness.  "Keep on the watch, therefore, " Jesus concludes,  "because you know neither the day nor the hour." - MATTHEW 25:1-13.

Jesus' Life and Ministry/Continue with The Wise and Foolish Virgins

In the illustration, the ten virgins go out with the  purpose of welcoming the bridegroom and of joining the wedding procession. When he arrives, they will light the processional route with their lamps, thus honoring him as he brings his bride into the house prepared for her. However, Jesus  explains: "The foolish took their lamps but took no oil with them, whereas the discreet took oil in their receptacles with their lamps.  While the bridegroom was delaying, they all nodded and went to sleep."

The extended delay of the bridegroom indicates that Christ's presence as ruling King is to be the distant future.  He finally comes to his throne in the year 1914.  During the long night prior thereto, all the virgins fall asleep . But they are not condemned for this. The condemnation  of the foolish virgins is for their not having oil for their receptacles. Jesus explains how the virgins awake before the bridegroom arrives:  "Right in the middle of the night  there arose a cry,  'Here is the bridegroom!  Be on your way out to meet him.' Then all those virgins rose and put their lamps in order. The foolish said to the discreet, 'Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are about to go out.' The discreet answered with the words, 'Perhaps there may not be quite enough for us and you. Be on your way, instead to those who sell it and buy for yourselves.

The oil symbolizes that which keep true Christians shining as illuminators, namely the inspired Word of God, on which they keep a tight grip, together with the holy spirit, which helps in understanding that Word. The spiritual oil enables the discreet virgins to shed forth light in welcoming the bridegroom during the procession to the marriage feast. But the foolish virgin class do not have in themselves the receptacles , the needed spiritual oil. So Jesus describes  what happens:

Jesus' Life and Ministry/The Wise and Foolish Virgins

JESUS had been answering his apostles' request for a sign of his presence in Kingdom power. Now he provides further features  of the sign in three parables, or illustrations.

The fulfillment of each illustration would observable by those living during his presence. He introduces the first one with the words:  "Then the Kingdom of the heavens will become like ten virgins that took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.  Fiver of them were foolish, and five were discreet."

By the expression "the kingdom of the heavens will become like ten virgins," Jesus does not mean that half of those who inherit the heavenly Kingdom are foolish persons and half are discreet ones! No, but he means that in connection with the Kingdom of the heavens, there a feature like this or like that, or that matters in connection with the Kingdom will be such a thing.

The ten virgins symbolize all Christians who are in line for or who profess to be in line for the heavenly Kingdom. It was at Pentecost 33 C.E. that the Christian congregation was promised in marriage to the resurrected, glorified Bridegroom, Jesus Christ.  But the marriage was to take place in heaven at some unspecified time in the future.

Will You "Keep on the Watch"? - HOW CAN CHRIST'S "OTHER SHEEP" BENEFIT?

Because Jesus directed the parable of the ten virgins to his anointed followers, should we conclude that this passage contains no benefit for Christ's "other sheep"? (John 10:16)  Far from it! Remember, the message of the parable is simple: "Keep on the watch." Does that apply only to the anointed? Jesus once said: "What I say to you, I say to all: Keep  on the watch." ( Mark 13:37) Jesus requires all his followers to prepare their hearts for faithful service and to meet the same standard for watchfulness.  So all Christians follow the lead set by the anointed in this regard, imitating their good example and putting the ministry first in life.  Each of us may also keep in mind that the foolish virgins asked the discreet ones to give up some of their oil.  Their vain request remind us that no one can be faithful for us, can stay in the truth for us, or can keep on the watch for  us.  Each of us will answer to the righteous Judge whom Jehovah has appointed. We must be ready.  And he is coming soon!

All Christians may also benefit from the main even in Jesus' parable. After all, who of us is not excited about that  prospect marriage?  The anointed will be there in heaven; after the war of Armageddon, they will become Christ's bride.  (Revelation 19:7-9)  Everyone then on earth will benefit from that heavenly marriage, for it guarantees a  perfect government for all. Whatever our hope for the future, whether heavenly or earthly, let us be resolved to learn the vital lesson of the parable of the ten virgins. Let us prove ready by preparing our hearts and keeping steadfast, ever vigilant, so that we may enjoy the glorious future  that Jehovah has in store for us!

Will You "Keep on the Watch"? - REWARD FOR THE DISCREET AND PUNISHMENT FOR THE FOOLISH

Perhaps the most puzzling part of the parable comes near the end, in the verbal exchange between the foolish and the discreet virgins. (Read Matthew 25:8, 9)  That exchange raises this question:  "When in the history of God's people would faithful ones refuse help to some who asked for it?" The solution to the puzzle presents itself when we again consider the time frame. Recall our clarified understanding that Jesus, the Bridegroom, comes to render near the end of the great tribulation. Is it not likely, then, that this part of the parable focuses on what happens just prior to that climatic judgment?  It would seem so, for by that time the anointed will have received their full sealing.

So, then, before the great tribulation starts, all the faithful anointed on earth will have received their final sealing.  (Revelation 7:1-4)  From then on, their calling is sure. But think about the year's before the tribulation begins. What would happen to anointed ones who failed to remain watchful, who lost their integrity?  They would lose their heavenly reward.  Obviously, they would receive no final sealing prior to the start of the tribulation. By that time, other faithful ones would be anointed. When the tribulation starts, the foolish ones might be shocked to see the destruction of Babylon the Great. It may be only at that point that they realize they are not ready for the arrival of the Bridegroom.  At that late hour, if they in desperation ask for help, what would happen?  Jesus' parable gives us the grim answer.  The discreet virgins refused to give up any of their oil for the sake of the foolish, telling them to go instead the sellers of oil. Remember, though, it was "in the middle of the night." Would they be able to find sellers of oil at that hour? No.  It would simply bee too late.

Likewise, during the great tribulation, faithful anointed ones cannot help any who had turned unfaithful.  There will be no help available. It will simply be too late. What end, then, will such ones face? Jesus explains  when the virgins went off on their futile errand:  "The bridegroom came.  The virgins who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut."  When Christ comes in his glory near the end of the tribulation, he will gather his faithful anointed ones to heaven.  (Matthew 24:31; 25:10; John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:17) The door will be shut to the unfaithful ones, who proved to be like the foolish virgins.  they may, in effect, cry out: "Sir, sir, open to us!" But they will receive an answer like the one that so many goatlike ones recieve in the hour of judgment:  "I tell you the truth, I do not know you." "How sad! - MATTHEW 7:21-23; 25:11, 12.

In view of the foregoing, what may we conclude?  Was Jesus saying that many of his anointed servants would prove  unfaithful and need to be replaced? No. Remember, he had just warned his "faithful and discreet slave" never to turn into an evil slave.  That did not mean that he expected such an outcome. Similarly, this parable  conveys a powerful warning.  Just as the five virgins were foolish and the five were discreet, each anointed one has full capacity to choose either a course of preparedness and vigilance or a course of folly and unfaithfulness.  The apostle Paul was inspired to make a similar point when address his anointed fellow Christians.  (Read Hebrews 6:4-9; compare Deuteronomy 30:19.)  Note that Paul's warning was very firm, but he followed it up with a loving expression of his confidence that "better things" lay ahead of his Christian brothers and sisters.  Likewise, the warning in Jesus' parable is given with loving confidence. Christ knows that each of his anointed servants can remain faithful and receive the thrilling reward!

Will You "Keep on the Watch"? - HOW HAVE THE ANOINTED APPLIED THE COUNSEL OF THE PARABLE?

Jesus' parable stresses that the discreet virgins, unlike the foolish, were ready for the bridegroom's coming.  Why? Because of two qualities: preparedness and vigilance.  The virgins assigned to this nighttime vigil to wait for the arrival of the bridegroom, needed to keep their lamps burning and to remain alert throughout the long hours until the exciting event.  Unlike the foolish ones, though, five virgins truly prepared themselves extra oil in their flasks along with their lamps. Have faithful anointed ones likewise proved to be prepared?

They have indeed! Throughout the last days, anointed Christians have acted like those discreet virgins, prepared  to carry out their assignment faithfully until the end.  They count the cost of faithful service, realizing from the outset that their assignment will mean giving up  many of the material advantages available in Satan's world.  They devote themselves exclusively to Jehovah and serve him, not with some date or deadline in mind, but out of love and loyalty to him and to his Son.  They maintain integrity, refusing to adopt the spirit  of this wicked world and its materialistic, immoral, and selfish attitudes.  They thus remain ready, steadily shining as illuminators, undaunted by  any apparent delay in the arrival of the Bridegroom. - PHILIPPIANS 2:15.

The second quality that helps those virgins to be ready is vigilance. Would it be possible for individual anointed Christians to get sleepy during a long nighttime vigil?  Indeed. Note that Jesus says of the ten virgins that "they all became drowsy and fell asleep" during the apparent delay of the bridegroom. Jesus knew that even a willing, eager spirit  may be hampered  by the weakness of the flesh. Faithful anointed ones have heeded that implied warning and have worked ever harder to remain vigilant, watchful,. In the parable, all the virgins responded to the nighttime shout:  "Here is the bridegroom!" But only vigilant ones endured to the end.  (Matthew 25:5, 6; 26:41) What about faithful anointed ones today?  Throughout the last days, they have responded to strong evidence that, in effect, cries out,  "Here is the bridegroom"-just about to come.  They have also endured, keeping ever ready for the Bridegroom to arrive.  However, the climax of the parable focuses on a more specific period of time. How so?

Will You "Keep on the Watch"? - WHAT IS THE PARABLE'S MESSAGE?

We noted in the preceding article that over recent decades, the faithful slave has gradually come to explain the Scriptures with less emphasis on symbolic prophetic pictures and more on practical application.  In the past, our literature at times assigned specific symbolic meanings even to small details of Jesus' parable of the ten virgins, including the lamps, the oil, the flasks, and so forth. Is it possible, though, that we were allowing the spotlight to shift from the parable's  simple, urgent message? As we will see, the answer is of vital importance.

Let us take a look at Jesus' basic message in this parable.  First, consider the main characters.  Who is the bridegroom of the parable?  Clearly, Jesus was talking about himself.  Why, on a different occasion, he even referred to himself as the bridegroom.  (Luke 5:34, 35) What about the virgins? In the parable, Jesus say that the virgins have the responsibility to be ready with their lamps lit when the  bridegroom arrives. Note the similar  directions that Jesus gave to his "little flock" of anointed followers: "Be dressed and ready and have your lamps burning, and you should be like men waiting for their master to return from the marriage." (Luke 12:32, 35, 36)  Furthermore,  both the apostle Paul and the apostle John were inspired to liken Christ's anointed followers to chaste  virgins.  (2 Corinthians 11:2; Revelation 14:4) Clearly, Jesus intended the parable recorded at Matthew 25:1-13 as counsel and a warning to his anointed followers.

Next, consider the time frame. To what  time period did Jesus' counsel apply?  Jesus supplies us with a clear time indicator toward the end of the parable:  "The bridegroom came." (Matthew 25:10)  As was discussed in the July 15, 2013 issue, of this journal, Jesus' prophecy recorded in Matthew chapters 24 and 25 contains  eight references to his "coming", in each case, a form of the same Greek word is used.  In ever instance, Jesus was referring to the time during the great tribulation when he will come to carry out the judging work and then the destruction of this world system of things. Evidently, then, this parable applies during the last days, but its climax comes during the great tribulation.

What is this parable's basic message?  Remember the context.  Jesus had just discussed his "faithful and discreet slave."  That slave would prove to be a small group of anointed men who would take the lead among Christ's followers during the last days.  Jesus warned those men that they must remain faithful. Next, he broadened his focus and gave this parable to admonish all his anointed followers in the last days to "keep on the watch" lest they miss out on their precious reward.  (Matthew 25:13) Let us now go through the parable and see how the anointed have applied its counsel.

Will You "Keep on the Watch"?

IT MUST have been a remarkable thing to sit there on the Mount of Olives-overlooking the temple in Jerusalem-when Jesus uttered one of his most fascinating prophecies.  Peter, Andrew, James, and John paid rapt attention as Jesus cast his prophetic gaze  far, far into the future.  He told them a great deal about the last days of this wicked world system, the time when he would be ruling in God's Kingdom.  He told them that during that climatic time, his "faithful and discreet slave" would represent him on earth, giving his servants the timely spiritual nourishment they needed. - MATTHEW 24:45-47.

Next, in that same prophecy, Jesus related the parable of the ten virgins.  (Read Matthew 25:1-13.)  Let us focus  on these questions (1) What is that parable's basic message? (2) Hpow have faithful anointed ones applied the parable's counsel, and with what results? (3) How can each of us benefit from Jesus' parable today?

Conclusion of Vigilant and Diligent During His Presence

An Israelite farmer who planted seed had to wait, first for the blade to appear, then for the plant to mature, and finally for the harvest.  (Luke 8:5-8; John 4:35)  Over those months, there was a time and perhaps cause for some anxiety.  Would the early rains come and be ample? What of the later rains? Might insects or a storm kill the plants? (Compare Joel 1:4; 2:23-25) Nonetheless, overall an Israelite farmer could trust Jehovah and the natural cycles he has set in place.  (Deuteronomy 11:14; Jeremiah 5:24)  The farmer's patience could really amount to confident expectation.  In faith he knew that what he was waiting for would come. It really would!

While a farmer might have some knowledge of when the harvest will be, first-century Christians could calculate when Jesus' presence would be. It was certain to come, though.  James wrote:  "The presence [Greek, pa-rou-si'a] has drawn close." At the time James penned those words, the large-scaled, or global sign of Christ's presence was not yet in evidence. But It is now! So how should we feel in this period? The sign is actually visible. We see it.  We can say with assurance, 'I see the sign being fulfilled.' We can confidently say, 'The presence of the Lord is here, and its climax is at hand'

Since that is the case, we have especially strong reason to take to heart and apply the fundamental lessons of Jesus' two parables that we have discussed. He said: "Keep on the watch, therefore, because you know neither the day nor the h0ur." (Matthew 25:13)  Now is unquestionably the time for us to be zealous in our Christian service.  Let us show daily in our lives that we understand Jesus' point. Let us be vigilant! Let us be diligent!

Vigilant and Diligent During His Presence

Yes, aside from their figurative and prophetic meaning, these two parables present us with clear encouragement that comes from the mouth of Jesus himself.  His message is this: Be Vilgilant; be diligent especially when the sign of Christ pa-rou-si'a is seen. That is now. So are we being vigilant and diligent?

Jesus' half brother James was not on the Mount of Olives to hear Jesus' prophecy, but he later learned of it, and he clearly grasped the import.  He wrote:  "Exercise patient, therefore, brothers, until the presence of the Lord. Look! The former keeps waiting for the precious fruit of the earth, exercising patience over it until he gets the early rain and the late rain. You too exercise patience; make your hearts firm, because the presence of the Lord has drawn close." - JAMES 5:7, 8.

Having given assurance that God will judge adversely those who misuse their riches, James urged Christians not to be impatient while waiting for Jehovah to act.  And impatient Christian might become vindictive as if he himself had the right the wrongs committed. That should not be, through, because the time of judgment is certain to arrive.  The example of a farmer illustrates that, as James explained.

Be Vigilant and Be Diligent - Conclusion of 0 Be Diligent as the End Nears

Again, details of this can be understood in  symbolic sense.  For example,  Jesus, pictured by the man traveling abroad, would leave his disciples, go to heaven, and wait a long time until he received the kingly power." (Psalm 110:1-4; Acts 2:34-36; Romans 8:34; Hebrews 1-0:12, 13) Again, though, we can perceive a broader lesson or principle that all of us can apply  in our lives.  What is that?

Whether our hope is that of immortal life in heaven or of everlasting life on a paradise earth, it is clear from Jesus' parable that we should  be exerting ourselves in Christian activities.  In fact, the message of this parable can be summed up in a word: diligence.  The apostles set the pattern from Pentecost 33 C.E. onward.  We read:  "With many other words [Peter] bore thorough witness and kept exhorting them, saying:  'Get saved from this crooked generation." (Acts 2:40-42)  And what excellent returns we had on his efforts! As other joined the apostles in the Christian preaching work, they too were diligent, with the good new "increasing in all the world." - COLOSSIANS 1:3-6, 23:1; CORINTHIANS 3:5-9.

Bear in mind the context of this parable-a prophecy about Jesus' presence.  We have ample confirmation that Jesus' pa-rou-si'a is in progress and will soon reach a climax.  Recall the connection Jesus made between "the end" and the work Christians need to do: "This good news of the kingdom will be preached  in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and the end will come." (Matthew 24:14)  With this in mind, which sort of slave do we resemble?  Ask yourself:  "Would there be reason to conclude that I am like the slave who hid what was entrusted to him, perhaps while he took care of his own personal concerns? Or is it clear that I am like those who were good and faithful?  Am I totally committed to increasing the Master's interests on every occasion?'

In his next parable, Jesus did more than urge his followers to be vigilant. After telling of the wise and the foolish virgins, he related the illustration of the talents. (Read Matthew 25:14-30)  In many respects this resembles his earlier parable of the minas, which Jesus gave because many were imagining that the kingdom of God would display itself instantly." - LUKE 19:11-27.

In the parable of the talents, Jesus told of a man who, prior  to making a journey abroad,   summoned three slaves. To one he committed five talents, to another two, and to the last just one-"to each one according to his own ability."  Likely, this meant a silver talent, a standard amount than worth what a laborer would earn in 14 years-a lot of money!  When the man returned, he had the slaves account for what they did during the "long time" that he was away.  The first two slaves had doubled the value of what was entrusted them.  He said "well done," promised each one more responsibility, and concluded:  "Enter into the joy of your master." Claiming that the master was extremely dominating, the slave with one talent had not put the talent to any profitable use.  He  hid the money, not even depositing it with bankers to earn interest.  The master termed him "wicked and sluggish" because he had worked against his master's interests.  Consequently, the taken from  him, and he was put outside "where his weeping and the gnashing of his teeth" would be.

Be Vigilant and Be Diligent - Conclusion of Be Vigilant,, as the Five Virgins Were

The other five-those whom Jesus called discreet-also went out with lighted lamps, expecting the groom's  arrival. Thy had to wait too, but they were discreet."   The Greek word translated "discreet" can convey the sense of being "prudent, sensible, practically wise." These five proved that they were discreet by bringing receptacles with extra oil to refill their lamps if necessary.  In fact, they were so focused on being ready for the groom that hey would not give away their oil. Such vigilance was not misplaced, as is proved by their being present and completely prepared when the groom arrived.  These  who "were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut.

Jesus was not offering a lesson in wedding decorum, nor was he giving counsel about sharing.  His point was: "Keep on the watch, therefore, because you know neither the day or the hour."  Ask yourself,  'Am I truly vigilant with regard to Jesus presence?'  We believe that Jesus now reigns in heaven, but how focused are we on the reality that 'the Son of Man will soon come on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory? (Matthew 24:30)  By "the middle of the night," the groom's arrival certainly was closer than when the virgins first went out to meet him.  Similarly, the Son of man's arrival  to destroy the present system  is closer than when we began looking forward to his coming. (Romans 13:11-14) Have we maintained our vigilance, being even  more vigilant as that time draws closer?

To obey the command "keep on the watch" requires constant vigilance.  Five virgins let their oil run out and went to buy more.  A Christian today might similarly be distracted  so that he is not fully prepared for Jesus' imminent arrival. It happened to some first-century Christians. It can happen to some today.  So let us ask ourselves, 'Is it happening to me?" - 1 THESSALONIANS 5:6-8; HEBREWS 2:2; 3:12' 12:3; REVELATION 16:15.

Be Vigilant and Be Diligent - Be Vigilant, as the Five Virgins Were!

You may wish to reread the parable of the virgins, found at  Matthew 25:1-13. The setting is a grand Jewish wedding in which the groom goes to the house of the bride's father to escort her to the groom's home (or to his father's). Such a procession might include musicians and singers, and the time of its arrival would not be known precisely. In the parable, ten virgins waited into the night for the groom's arrival. Five had foolishly not brought enough lamp oil and thus had to go buy more.  The other five had wise brought extra oil in receptacles so that they could refill their lamps if necessary during the wait. Only these five were on hand and ready when the groom arrived. Hence, only they were allowed to enter the feast. When the five foolish virgins  returned, it was too late for them to enter.

Many aspects of this parable can be understood as being symbolic. For example, the Scriptures speak of Jesus as the bridegroom.  (John 3:28-30) Jesus likened himself to a king's son for who a marriage feast was prepared. (Matthew 22:1-14) And the Bible compares Christ to a husband. (Ephesians 5:23)  Interestingly, while anointed Christians are elsewhere described as the "bride" of Christ, the parable does not   mention a bride. (John 3:29; Revelation 19:7; 21:2, 9) It does, though, speak of ten virgins, and the anointed are elsewhere likened to a virgin promised in marriage to Christ. - 2 CORINTHIANS 11:2.

Aside from such details and any prophetic applications, there certainly are fine principles that we can learn from this parable.  For instance, note that Jesus closed it with the words: "Keep on the watch, therefore, because  you know neither the day nor the hour.   So the parable conveys the need for each of us to be vigilant, to be alert to the approaching end of this wicked system.  This end is unquestionably coming, even though we cannot pinpoint a date. In this regard, note the attitudes manifested  by the two groups of virgins.

Jesus said: "Five of them were foolish." What that because  they did not belive that the groom was coming? Were they off  pursuing pleasures?  Or were they deceived?  None of those.  Jesus said that these five "went out to meet the bridegroom." They knew that he was coming, and they wanted to be involved, even to share in the "marriage feast."  Yet, were sufficiently prepared?  They waited a while for him, until "the middle of the night," but they were not prepared for his arrival whenever that would be-whether earlier or later than they initially expected.

Be Vigilant and Be Diligent!

"Keep on the watch, therefore, because you know neither the day nor the hour." - MATTHEW  25:13.

In the last dialogue in the Bible, Jesus promised: "I am coming quickly." His apostle John replied: Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.  The apostle had no doubt that Jesus would come. John was among the apostles who had asked Jesus: "When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence [Greed, pa-rou-si'a] and of the conclusion of the system of things? Yes, John confidently looked forward to Jesus' future presence. REVELATION 22:20; MATTHEW 24:3.

Such confidence is rare nowadays. Many churches have an official doctrine about Jesus' "coming." but few of their members really expect it. They live accordingly. The book the Parousia in the New Testament notes: "There is little positive integration of the Parousia hope into the life, though and work of the church. . . . The intense urgency with which the church should undertake its tasks of repentance and of missionary proclamation of the gospel, is weakened if not entirely lost." But not to everyone!

Jesus' true disciples are eagerly awaiting the end of the present system of things. While loyally doing so, we need to keep the right outlook toward all that is involved in Jesus' presence and act accordingly. That will enable us to 'endure to the end and be saved.' (Matthew 24:13) In the course of giving the prophecy that we find in Matthew  chapters 24 and 25, Jesus provided wise advice that we can apply, to our last benefit. Chapter 26 contains parables that you likely know, including the one about ten virgins (the wise and foolish virgins) and the parables of the talents.  (Matthew 25:1-30) How can we benefit from those illustrations?

A Lesson in Vigilance - Conclusion of The Ten Virgins

The apostles can see that the bridegroom whom Jesus  mentions refers to himself.  Earlier he had even likened himself to a bridegroom. (Luke 5:34, 35)  And the wise virgins?  When speaking about the "little flock," who would be given the Kingdom, Jesus used the words: "Be dressed and ready and have your lamps burning." (Luke 12:32, 35)  So in this illustration about the virgins, the apostles can grasp that Jesus is referring to ones such as themselves. Hence, what is the message that Jesus is  conveying with this illustration?

Jesus does not leave any doubt about that. He concludes his illustration by saying: "Keep on the watch, therefore, because you know neither the day nor the hour." - MATTHEW 25:13.

Clearly, Jesus is admonishing his faithful followers that in connection with his presence, they will need to "keep on the watch." He will be coming, and they need to be prepared and vigilant-like the five discreet virgins-in order not to lose sight of their precious hope and miss out on the reward that can be theirs.

A Lesson in Vigilance - Continue with The Ten Virgins

Jesus explains: "The foolish took their lamps but took no oil with them, whereas the discreet took oil in their flasks along with their lamps. While the bridegroom  was delaying, they all became drowsy and fell asleep." (Matthew 25:3-5) The bridegroom does not arrive as soon as expected. There seems to be a  long delay, during which the virgins fall asleep. The apostles may recall what Jesus related about a man of noble birth who went away and "eventually got back after having secured the kingly power." - LUKE 19:11-15.

In the illustration of the ten virgins, Jesus describes what happens when the bridegroom finally  arrives: "Right in the middle of the night there was a shout: 'Here is the bridegroom!  Go out  to meet him.'"  (Matthew 25:6)  What is the situation of the virgins and their preparedness and vigilance?

Jesus continues: "Then  all those virgins got up and put their lamps in order.  The foolish said to the discreet,  'Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are about to go out.' The discreet answered, saying: "Perhaps there may not be enough for both of us and you.  Go instead to those who sell it, and buy some for yourselves." - MATTHEW 25:7-9.

So the five foolish virgins are not vigilant and are not prepared for the arrival of the bridegroom.   They lack sufficient oil for their lamps and need to find some.  Jesus relates:  "While they were  going off to buy it, the bridegroom came.  The virgins who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.  Afterward, the rest of  the virgins also came, saying,  'Sir, Sir, open up to us!' In answer he said, 'I tell you the truth, I do not know you.'" (Matthew 25:10-12) What a sad outcome for not remaining prepared and vigilant!

A Lesson in Vigilance-The Virgins

"Matthew 25:1-13.

* JESUS GIVES THE ILLUSTRATION OF THE TEN VIRGINS

Jesus has been answering his apostle's  question regarding the sign of his presence and of the conclusion of the system of things.  With this in mind, he now gives them  wise admonition by means of an illustration.  Its fulfillment would observable by those living during his  presence.

He introduces the illustration, saying: "The Kingdom of the heavens may be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.  Five of them were foolish, and five were discreet." - MATTHEW 25:1, 2.

Jesus does not mean that half of his disciples who inherit the Kingdom of the heavens are foolish and the other half are discreet. Rather, he is making the point that is in connection withe the   Kingdom, each of his disciples has the capacity to choose to be vigilant or to be distracted.  Jesus  has no doubt, though, that each of his servants can remain faithful and receive his Father's blessings.

In the illustration, all ten virgins go out to welcome the bridegroom and to join  the wedding procession.  When he arrives, the virgins will light the route with their lamps, honoring him as he brings his bride to the house  prepared for her. How do things work out, though?

THE FOUR HORSEMEN - HOW THEIR RIDE AFFECTS YOU - BETTER TIMES ARE AHEAD!

The present times of trouble will soon end.  Remember this: Jesus "went out conquering" in 1914, confining Satan to the earth, but Jesus did not then complete his conquest. (Revelation 6:2; 12:9, 12) Soon, during Armageddon, Jesus will remove Satan's influence and will destroy the Devil's human supporters.  (Revelation 20:1-3)  Jesus will not only terminate the ride of the other three horsemen but even reverse  the effects of their destructive ride. How so?  Consider what the Bible promises.

Instead of war, peace will resign. Jehovah "is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear." (Psalm 46:9)As for peace-loving people, "they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." - PSALM 37:11.

Instead of famine, there will be plenty of food. "There will be an abundance of grain on the earth; on top of the mountains it will overflow." - PSALM 72:16.

THE FOUR HORSEMEN -HOW THEIR RIDE AFFECTS YOU - THE RIDER OF THE PALE HORSE

"I saw, and look! a pale horse, and the one seated on it had the name Death. And the Grave was closely following him.  And authority was given them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with a long sword and with food shortage and with deadly plague and by the wild beasts of the earth." - REVELATION 6:8.

The fourth rider represents death due to plague and other causes.  Soon after 1914, the Spanish flu killed tens of millions. Possibly some 500 million people were infected, about 1 out of every 3 humans then alive!

But the Spanish flue was just the beginning. Experts estimate that hundreds of  millions are cut short by AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, despite intensive medical research.

The result is the same-death-whether due to war, famine, or plague.. The Grave relentlessly gathers up the victims, offering no hope.

THE FOUR HORSEMEN -HOW THEIR RIDE AFFECTS YOU - THE RIDER OF THE BLACK HORSE

"I saw, and look! a black horse, and the one seated on it had a pair of scales in his hand. I heard what sounded like a voice in the midst of the four living creatures say: "a quart of wheat for a denarius and three  quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the olive oil and the wine." - REVELATION 6:5, 6.

This rider represents famine. We find here a picture of food rationing in the first century! (Matthew 20:2)  The same coin  could purchase three quarts (3.24 L) of barley, a grain viewed as inferior to wheat.  How far would that go to feed a whole family?  People are then warned to be frugal even with daily foodstuffs, aptly pictured  by such basic staples of that time and culture as olive oil and wine.

Since 1914, have we seen evidence that this rider of the black horse has been on the move?  Yes! About 70 million people died in famines during the 20th century.  One authority estimated that "805 million  people-about one in nine of the world's population-were chronically undernourished in 2012-2014."  Another report states:  "Hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined."  In spite of many earnest efforts to feed the hungry the rider of the black horse continues to ride.

THE RIDER OF THE RED HORSE

"Another came out, a fiery-colored red horse, and it was granted to the one seated on it to take peace away from the earth so that the should slaughter one another, and he was given a  great sword." - REVELATION 6:4.

This rider represents warfare. Notice that he takes peace away from not just a few nations but the whole earth.  In 1914, for the first time in history, a global war erupted. It was followed by a second world war, which was even more destructive. Some estimates place the total number of deaths due to wars and armed conflicts since 1914 at more than a 100 million in addition, vast numbers of other individuals suffered injuries.

To what extent does warfare characterize the present time?  For the first time in history, mankind appears to have the ability to extinguish all human life. Even so-called peacekeeping organizations, such as the United Nations, have not been able to stop the rider of the red horse.

THE FOUR HORSEMEN - HOW THEIR RIDE AFFECTS YOU - THE RIDER OF THE WHITE HORSE

The vision begins this way: "I saw, and look! A white horse, and the one seated on it had a bow; and a crown was given him, and he went out conquering and to complete his conquest." - REVELATION 6:2.

Who is the rider of the white horse?  They key to his identity is found in the same Bible book, Revelation, which later identifies this heavenly rider as "The Word of God." (Revelation 19:11-13)  That title, The Word, belongs to Jesus Christ, for he acts as God's spokesman.  (John 1:1, 14) In addition, he is called "King of kings and Lord of lords" and is described as "Faithful and True." (Revelation 19:16) Clearly, he has authority to act as a warrior king, and he does not wield his  power in any corrupt or abusive way. Yet, some questions arise.

Who gives Jesus the authority to conquer? ( Revelation 6:2) The prophet Daniel saw a vision in which the Messiah, likened to "a son of man," was given  "rulership , honor, and a kingdom" by none other than "the Ancient of Days,"  Jehovah God. (Daniel 7:13, 14) Thus, it is Almighty God who grants Jesus the power and right to rule and execute judgment. The white horse is an appropriate symbol for warfare justly carried out by God's Son, for the Scriptures often uses the color white to symbolize righteousness. - REVELATION 3:4; 7:9, 13, 14.

When did the horsemen begin their ride?  Note that the first rider, Jesus, begins his ride when he receives a crown.  (Revelation 6:2) When was Jesus crowned as King in heaven? It was not when he returned to heaven after his death.  The Bible shows that a period of waiting began back then.  (Hebrews 10:12, 13)  Jesus gave his followers a means of recognizing the end of that waiting period and the beginning of his reign in heaven. He said that at the beginning of his rule, world conditions would take a decisive turn for the worse.  There would be warfare, food shortages, and pestilences. (Matthew 24:3, 7; Luke 21:10, 11) Soon after World War I  broke out in 1914, it became apparent that mankind had entered that era, a troubled time on earth that the Bible calls "the last days." - 2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5.

But why have we seen conditions that are worse, not better, since Jesus received his crown in 1914? Because at that time, Jesus began ruling in heaven, not on earth.  War than broke out in heaven, and the newly installed King, Jesus, referred to as Michael, cast Satan and his demons to the earth.  (Revelation  12:7-9. 12) Confined here, Satan has been full of rage ever since, knowing  that his days are numbered .  Indeed, it will not be long before God will carry out his will against Satan here on earth.  (Matthew 6:10)  Now, let us see how the other three horsemen, who clearly pictures a specific individual, the three that follow represent global conditions that have swept across human society.
