Lessons We Can Learn From the Book of Leviticus

"All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial." - ! TIMOTHY 3:16.

THE apostle Paul reminded his young friend Timothy that "all Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial." (2 Timothy 3:16)  That includes the book of Leviticus. How do you view that Bible book? Some may see it as a book that contains a list of rules that do not apply to our day, but true Christians have a different view.

Leviticus was written some 3,500 years ago, yet Jehovah had it preserved "for our instruction." (Romans 15:4)  Because Leviticus sheds light on Jehovah's thinking, we should be eager to examine it. Actually, there are a number of lessons we can learn from that inspired book. Let us consider four of them.

Are You Maintaining Your "Large Shield of Faith"? - KEEP A FIRM HOLD ON YOUR SHIELD OF FAITH

We must never forget that we are at war and must be ready to fight the battle each day. (Revelation 12:17)  Our brothers and sisters cannot carry our shield of faith for us. We personally must keep a firm hold on it.

In ancient times, a soldier gained honor because of his bravery in fare.  But he would feel humiliated if he returned home without his shield. The Roman historian Tacitus wrote: "To have abandoned one's shield i s the height of disgrace."  That is one reason why soldiers made sure to keep a firm hold on their shields.

We keep a firm hold on our shield of faith by regularly attending meetings and by speaking about Jehovah's name and his Kingdom to others.  (Hebrews 10:23-25)  In addition, we  prayerfully read God's Word everyday and apply it to counsel and direction in all that we do. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) Then, no weapon that Satan uses against us will cause us any lasting harm.  (Isaiah 54:17) Our "large shield of faith" will protect us. We will stand firm, shoulder to shoulder with out brothers and sisters. And we will do more than win our daily battles-we will have the honor of being on Jesus' side when he wins the war against Satan and his followers. - Revelation 17:14l; 20:10.

Are You Maintaining Your "Large Shield of Faith"? - PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MATERIALISM

Materialism  can cause us to become distracted and neglect our shield of faith.  The apostle Paul said:  "No man serving as a soldier involves himself in the commercial businesses of life, in order to gain the approval of the one who enrolled him."  (2 Timothy 2:4) In fact,  Roman soldiers were not allowed to get involved in any trade.   What might happen if a soldier ignored that requirement?

Imagine the scene.  A group of soldiers spend the morning training with their swords, but one of  their company is missing. That soldier is in town  setting up a food shop. In the evening, the soldiers spend time inspecting their armor and sharpening their swords. But the one who owns the shop spends his time preparing food to sell the next day. The next morning, however, an enemy launches  a surprise attack.  Which soldier is  more likely  to act appropriately and earn the approval of his commanding officer? And whom would you want standing beside you - a soldier who focused on being prepared or the one who was distracted?

Like good soldiers,, we not become distracted from our primary goal-gaining the approval of our Commanders, Jehovah and Christ.  We view that as being more valuable than gaining anything Satan's world has to offer.  We make sure  that we have the time and energy we need to serve Jehovah and to keep our shield of faith and the rest of our spiritual armor in good condition.

We must never let down our guard! Why? The apostle Paul warned that "those who  are determined to be rich" will be "led astray from the faith." (1 Timothy6:9, 10)  The expression "led astray" indicates that we could become distracted by trying to acquire unnecessary  possessions. We could then expose our heart to "many senseless   and harmful desires."  Rather than allow those desires in our heart, we must see them for what they are-weapons that can harm us.

Suppose we have the financial means to buy many material things. Are we doing something wrong if we purchase things that we want but not actually need? Not necessarily.  But reflect on these questions:  Even if we can afford to buy something, do we really have the time and energy to use and maintain the item? Also, might we become overly attached to our possession?  Could our attachment to material things cause us to act  like the young man who turned down Jesus' invitation to expand his service to God?  (Read Mark 10:17-22)    How much better it is for us to lead a simple life and spend our precious time and strength in doing God's will!

Are You Maintaining Your "Large Shield of Faith"? - Conclusion of PROTECT YOURSELF FROM UNDUE ANXIETY, LIES, AND DISCOURAGEMENT

Discouragement  can weaken our faith.  We cannot ignore or personal problems. In fact, it would be irresponsible of us to try to do so. And at times we may feel discouraged. But we must not allow our problems to dominate our thinking. If we do so, we  might lose sight of the marvelous hope that Jehovah has given us.  (Revelation 21:3, 4)  Feelings of discouragement could then drain our strength and cause us to give up. (Proverbs 24:10)  But that does not have to happen to us.

Consider how a sister in the United States is maintaining her faith while caring for her seriously ill husband.   In a letter to headquarters, she wrote: "Our situation has been stressful and discouraging at times, but our hope is strong.  I am so very impressed with the information we have been getting to strengthen our faith and lift up our spirits.  We really need this counsel and encouragement. It keeps us going and helps us endure  the trials that Satan hurls at us."  We  learn from this sister's comments that we can overcome discouragement!  How? View your trials as being a test from Satan. Recognize Jehovah as being the source of comfort . and appreciate the spiritual food he provides.

Do you see any ares in your shield of faith that need maintenance?  During the past few months, have you been able to avoid giving to undue anxiety?  Have you resisted the urge to listen and to argue with apostates about the lies they spread?  And  have been able to cope with discouragement?  If so, then your faith is in good condition. But we must remain on guard because Satan has other weapons that he tries to use against us. Let us now consider one of them.

Are You Maintaining Your "Large Shield of Faith"? - PROTECT YOURSELF FROM UNDUE ANXIETIES, LIES AND DISCOURAGEMENT

Some types of anxiety are good.  For example, we are properly concerned about pleasing Jehovah and Jesus.  (1 Corinthians 7:32)  IF we commit a serious sin, we are anxious  to restore our friendship with God. (Psalm 38:18)  We are also anxious to please our marriage mate and to care for the welfare of our family members and fellow believers. - 1 CORINTHIANS 7:33; 2 CORINTHIANS 11:28.

On the other hand, undue anxiety could damage our faith.  For example, we may constantly worry about having enough food and clothing.  (Matthew 6:231,32) To ease that worry, we might focus on gaining material possessions.  We could even develop a love of money.  If we allow that to happen, our faith in Jehovah  will become weak and we will suffer serious spiritual harm.  (Mark 4:19; 1 Timothy 6:10)  Or we might fall victim to another type of anxiety-becoming overly concerned about gaining the approval of others.  We may then fear being ridiculed or persecuted by men more than we fear displeasing Jehovah.   To protect ourselves from that danger, we must beg Jehovah  to give us the faith we need to face the challenge. - Read PROVERBS 29:25; LUKE 17:5.

Satan, "the father of lie," uses those under his control to spread lies about Jehovah and about our brothers and sisters.  (John 8:44) For instance, apostates publish lies and distort facts about Jehovah's organization on websites and through television and other media. Those lies are among Satan's "burning arrows."  (Ephesians 6:16)  How should we respond if someone confronts us with such lies?  We reject them! Why? Because we faith in Jehovah and we trust our brothers. In fact, we avoid all contact with apostates. We do not allow anyone or anything, including curiosity to draw us into arguing with them.

Are You Maintaining Your "Large Shield of Faith"? - CAREFULLY INSPECT YOUR SHIELD

In Bible times, soldiers often had shields that were covered with leather.  The soldiers oiled the shields to preserve the leather and to keep the metal parts free from rust.  If a soldier discovered that his shield was damaged, he made sure  that it was repaired  so that he was always ready for the next battle.  How does that apply to your faith?

Like soldiers of ancient times, you must regularly in inspect and maintaining your shield of faith so that you are always prepared for battle.  As Christians,, we wage a spiritual battle and our enemies include wicked spirits.  (Ephesians 6:10-12)   No one else can maintain your shield of faith for you. How can you be sure that you are ready to face tests?  First, you must pray for God's help.  Then, you need to use Go's Word to help you see yourself as God sees you.  (Hebrews 4:12)  The Bible states: trust in Jehovah with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5, 6) With that in mind, why not review some of the decisions you have made recently?  For example, have you faced a serious financial problem? Did Jehovah's  promise  recorded at Hebrews 13:5 come to mind: "I will never leave you? Did that promise give you confidence that Jehovah would help you?   If so, that indicates that you are keeping your shield of faith in good condition.

You might be surprised at what you find when you carefully examine your faith.  You  may discover weaknesses that have gone unnoticed  for some time. For example, you may realize that undue anxiety, lies, and discouragement have damaged  your faith.   If this has happened to you, how can you protect your faith from further harm?

How Holy Spirit Helps Us - PRAY WITH PERSISTENCE

Read Luke 11:5-9, 13.  Jesus' illustration shows how we should pray for holy spirit.  In the illustration, the man received what he needed "because of bold persistence."  He was not afraid to ask his friend for help even though it was late at night. How did Jesus apply this illustration to prayer: "Keep on asking, and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking, and it will be opened to you." So, what is the lesson for us? To receive the help of holy spirit, we must pray for it with persistence.

Jesus' illustration also helps us to see why Jehovah will give us holy spirit. The man in the illustration wanted to be a good host.  He felt compelled to serve food to his late-night visitor but had nothing to offer him. Jesus said that the neighbor responded because the man's bold persistence in asking for bread.  What was Jesus' point?  If an imperfect human is willing to help a persistent neighbor, how  much more so will our kind heavenly Father help those who persistently  ask him for holy spirit!  Therefore, we can pray with confidence that Jehovah will respond to our urgent request for holy spirit. - PSALM 20:17;  66:19.

We can be sure That in time of Satan's efforts to defeat us, we will be victorious . Why? Because holy spirit  helps us in two ways. First, it gives us the power we need to overcome trials. Second, it is the force that "fills our sails," helping us to move forward in serving Jehovah with life in God's world in view. Let us be determined to benefit fully from the help of holy spirit! 000000000

How Holy Spirit Helps Us - HOW TO BENEFIT FULLY FROM HOLY SPIRIT

First, study God's Word.  (Read 2 Timothy 3:16, 17.) The Greek word translated "Inspired of God" literally means "God-breathed." God used his spirit to "breathe" is thoughts into the minds of Bible writers.  When we read the Bible and meditate on what we read, God's instructions enter our mind and heart.  Those inspired thoughts move us to bring our life in line with God's will. (Hebrews 4:12)  But to benefit fully from  holy spirit, we must set aside time to study the Bible regularly and to think deeply about what we read.  Then God's Word will influence all that we say and do.

Second, worship God together. ( Psalm 22:22)  in a sense, our Christian meetings are events where "the wind is blowing."  Jehovah's spirit is present at our meetings. (Revelations 2:29  Why can we say that?  Because when we meet for worship with fellow Christians, we pray for holy spirit, we sing Kingdom songs based on God's Word,  and we listen to Bible-based instruction presented by brothers who have been anointed by holy spirit. And that same holy spirit helps sisters prepare and deliver their parts. To benefit fully from holy spirit, however, we need to come prepared to participate in the meetings. That way, we  attend the meetings with "unfurled sails."

Third, share in the preaching work.  When we use the Bible in the preaching and teaching work, we allow holy spirit to be involved in our ministry.  (Romans 15:18, 19)  To benefit fully from God's spirit, though, you must have a regular share in the preaching work and use the Bible whenever possible. On way you can make your ministry more meaningful is by using the sample conversations from the Life and Ministry Workbook.

Fourth, pray to Jehovah. (Matthew 7:7-11; Luke 11:13)  The most direct way to obtain holy spirit is to ask Jehovah for it in prayer.  Nothing can stop our prayers from reaching Jehovah or block the good gift of Gods spirit from reaching us-not any prison wall and not even Satan. (James 1:17) How should we pray so that we benefit fully from holy spirit?  To answer, let us examine the subject of prayer in more detail by considering all illustration found only in Luke's Gospel.

How Holy Spirit Helps Us - Conclusion of Holy Spirit Moves Us Forward

Of course, the time for recording inspired writings has passed for now. However, holy spirit is still exerting power on God's people.  Jehovah is still doing his part. How can be benefit from God's holy spirit?  We need to make sure that we keep doing our part. How do we do that?

Think of this comparison.  To benefit from the wind, a sailor must do two things. First, he has to put his boat in the path of the wind. After all his boat will not move forward if the sailor remains in a harbor far away from where the wind is blowing. Second, he needs to raise and unfurl the sails as fully as possible. Obviously, even with the wind blowing, his boat will move forward only if the sails catch the wind.   Similarly, we will endure in Jehovah's service only if we have the help of holy spirit. To benefit from that spirit, we must take two steps. First, we must put ourselves squarely in the pat of God's spirit by sharing in activities that bring us under its influenced. Second, we need to "raise our sails" as fully as possible by being fully engaged in these activities to the best of our ability.  (Psalm 119:32)   When we take these steps, holy spirit will push us forward to through waves of opposition and trials and will help us endure faithfully on the course to God's new world.

So far we have discussed two ways in which holy spirit helps us.  Holy spirit gives up power and helps us stay faithful while facing trials.  Holy spirit also moves us forward and helps us to remain on the path to life everlasting. Now we will consider four things we must do to benefit fully from holy spirit.

How Holy Spirit Helps Us - HOLY SPIRIT MOVES US FORWARD

What is yet another way in which holy spirit helps us? Like a favorable wind on a stormy sea, holy spirit  moves us forward through stormy trials to the haven of God's promised new world.

As a fisherman, the apostle Peter was accustomed to sailing. So it is worth noting that he  described the working of holy spirit by using an expression that apparently is related to sailing. He wrote:  " Prophecy was at  time brought by man's will, but men spoke from God as they were moved by holy spirit."  The Greek word translated "moved" literally means  "carried along; born along." - s 2 PETER 1:22.

What word picture did  Peter draw with the expression "borne along"?  A similar form of the same Greek word was used by Luke, the writer of Acts, to describe a ship that is "driven along" by the wind. (Acts 27:15)  So when Peter wrote that Bible writers were "borne along."  he used "a fascinating maritime metaphor." as one Bible scholar put it, Peter said, in effect that just as  ship is carried along by the wind to accomplish its journey, so Bible prophets and writers were born along by holy spirit to accomplish their task.  The same scholar said:  "The prophets raised their sails, so to speak." Jehovah did his part. He provided "the wind," or holy spirit.  The Bible writers did their part.   They worked in harmony with the direction of that spirit.

How Holy Spirit Helps UsAnd wLY SPIRIT GIVES US POWER

Jehovah's holy spirit helps us by giving us the power, or strength, to fulfill our responsibilities despite trials.  The apostle Paul  felt that he was able to keep working despite his trials because he relied on "the power of the Christ." (2 Corinthians 12:9)  During his second ministry tour, Paul not only worked hard in preaching but also supported  himself financially.  He stayed in Corinth in the home of Aquila and Priscilla, they were tentmakers, Since Paul practiced the same trade, he worked with them part-time.  ( Acts 18:1-4)  Holy spirit gave Paul the power both to work secularly ad to accomplish his ministry. Read 2 Corinthians 12:7b-9.   In this passage,  what did Paul mean when he said that he struggled with "a thorn in the flesh"?  If you had a thorn stuck in your body, you would be in a lot pain.   So Paul was saying that faced a painful personal trial of some sort.  He called this trial "an angel of Satan" that kept "slapping" (beating,")  him.   Satan or his demon angels may not directly have caused Paul's trials, as if driving a thorn into his flesh.  But when those wicked spirits noticed the "thorn,"  They  may have been eager to push it in deeper, so to speak, increase Paul's pain. What did Paul do?

At first, Paul wanted to be rid of the "thorn."  he admits:  "Three times I begged the Lord  [Jehovah] . . . that it would depart from me." Yet, despite Paul's prayers, the thorn in the flesh remained.  Does this mean that Jehovah did not answer Paul's prayers? Not at all. He did answer them. Jehovah  did not remove the problem, but he did give Paul the strength to endure it. Jehovah said:"My power is being made perfect  in weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:8, 9)  And with God's help, Paul was able to maintain his joy and inner peace! - PHILIPPIANS 4:3-7.

Like Paul, have you ever begged Jehovah to deliver you from a trial?  If despite your earnest pleadings the problem persisted-or even got worse-did you worry that perhaps Jehovah was displeased with you?  If so, remember Paul's example.  Just as Jehovah answered his prayers, He will certainly respond to your prayers!  Jehovah  may not remove the problem.  But by means of holy spirit, he will give you the  strength you need to endure the trial.   (Psalm  61:3, 4) You may be  "knocked down," but Jehovah will not abandon you. 2 CORINTHIANS 4:8, 9;  PHILIPPIANS 4:13.

How Holy Spirit Helps Us

"For all the things I have the strength through the one who gives me power." - PHILIPPIANS 4:13.

"WHEN I think about the trial I have been through, I know  that I  could not have faced it on my own."  Have you ever said something like that? Many of us have. Perhaps you said it after reflecting on how you were able to cope with a serious illness or the death of a loved one. Looking back, you feel that you were able to go on from day to day only because Jehovah's holy spirit provided you with 'power beyond what is normal." - 2 CORINTHIAN 4:7-9.

We also rely on holy spirit to deal with the influence of this wicked world. (John 5:19) In addition, we have to struggle against "wicked spirit forces."  (Ephesians 6:12)  With all these pressures in mind, we will consider two ways in which holy spirit helps us. Then will discuss what we can do to benefit fully from holy spirit.

Did Jesus Die for Me? - JEHOVAH IS GREATER THAN OUR HEARTS

Until Satan's  wicked system is done away with, our hearts may continue to condemn us because of our past errors. What will help us to combat our feelings?

"I love that "God is greater than our hearts," says Jean, who often struggles with feelings of guilt over the double life she led when she was young. (1 John 3:19, 20)   We took can take comfort in knowing that Jehovah and Jesus have a much better perspective o four sinful condition than we do.  Remember, they lovingly provided the ransom, not perfect humans, but for repentant sinful ones. - 1 TIMOTHY 1:15.

We assure our hearts of this precious truth when prayerfully meditate on the way Jesus treated imperfect humans and when we our best to fulfill the ministry he has assigned us.  By doing so you, like Paul, can say: Jesus loved me and handed himself over for me."

Did Jesus Die for Me? - WHAT HELPED PAUL

Paul's ministry influenced the way he viewed Jesus' sacrifice. How so?  "I am grateful  to Christ Jesus our Lord, who imparted power to me, because he considered me faithful by assigning me to a ministry, although formerly I was a blasphemer and a persecut0r and a blasphemer and an insolent man." (1 Timothy 1:12-14)  Paul's assignment reassured him of Jesus' mercy, love, and trust in him personally.  Jesus likewise entrusted us with a personal ministry.  (Matthew 28:19, 20)  Can it affect us similarly?

Albert, who recently returned to Jehovah after being disfellowshipped for almost 34 years, explains: "My sins are always before me. But when I am in the ministry, I feel like the apostle Paul, I have personally been given a ministry from Jesus.  It builds me up and keeps me feeling positive about myself, my life, and my future." - PSALM 51:3.

Allan, who lived a life of crime and violence before he learned the truth, admits:  "I still think of all the harm I caused to people. At times, it makes me depressed. But I thank Jehovah that he allows a sinner like me to bring the good news to others.  When I see people's reaction to the good news, it reminds me of how good and loving Jehovah is.  I feel that he uses me to assist others who are struggling with a similar background."

Our personal ministry allows us to focus our energies on positive actions and thoughts. It reassures us of Jesus' mercy, love, and trust in us.

Did Jesus Die for Me? - JESUS' VIEW OF HIS SACRIFICE

Yes, Jesus wants us to view his sacrifice  as a  personal gift.  How can we be sure of that?  Picture the scene recorded Luke 23:39-43.  A man hangs on a torture stake near Jesus. He admits that he is guilty of past wrongdoing. The crime must have serious because this cruel punishment was reserved for criminals of the lowest sort.   Distressed by his plight, the man begs Jesus:  "Remember me when you get into your Kingdom."

How did Jesus respond?  Imagine him as he painfully adjusts his head to make eye contact.  Although in agony, he musters up a warm smile and reassures the man:  "Truly, I tell you today, you will be with me in Paradise." Jesus  could simply reminded the man that "the Son of  man came . . . to give his life as a ransom  in exchange many." (Matthew 20:28) But did you notice  that Jesus kindly empathized the personal nature of his sacrifice?  He set a friendly tone when he used the personal pronouns "you" and "me." And it kept it personal when he alluded to the man's prospect, to live  on a paradise earth.

No doubt, Jesus wanted this man to accept his sacrifice as a personal gift. If Jesus felt this way about a criminal who has not even has an opportunity  to serve God, he would surely feel this way about a baptized Christian who is serving God. What can help us, then, to cultivate such a wholesome feeling about ourselves despite our past sins?

Did Jesus Really Die for Me?

THE Bible is filled with heartfelt expressions from men "with feelings like ours."  (James 5:17)  For example, we can readily sympathize with Paul's candid admission found at Romans 7:21-24: "When I wish to do what is right, what is bad is present with me. . .  . Miserable man that I am!" Such honest feelings reassure us when we contend with our own imperfections.

Paul expressed other sincere feelings too.  At Galatians 2:20, he  stated conviction that Jesus "loved [him] and handed himself over for [him]" personally!  Does that describe "feelings like ours" as well? Perhaps not always.

If we contend with feelings of low self-worth because of our past sins, we may at times struggle to accept Jehovah's love and forgiveness, let alone to view the ransom sacrifice as a personal gift to us.  Does Jesus really want us to view the ransom in that way?  If so, what can help us to do that? Let us examine those two questions.

Reaching the Hearts of Non-Religious People - Conclusion of SHARING THE TRUTH WITH PEOPLE FROM ASIA

A brother from Asia uses the following approach when making return visits.  He says:  "I show them the examples of Bible wisdom, fulfilled Bible prophecies, and laws that control the universe. Then I show them how all of its points  to a living and wise Creator.  When a person accepts the possibility that God exists, I start showing him what the Bible says about Jehovah."

When we conduct Bible studies with people from non-religions backgrounds, we must continually build up their belief in the existence of God.  (Read Hebrews 11:6.)  And we need to help them to build their faith the Bible.  This might require  that we repeat some points a number of times. During each study session,  we may need to discuss evidence that the Bible is God's Word.  This may include a brief discussion of the Bible's fulfilled prophecies, scientific and historical accuracy, or practical wisdom.

We help people to become disciples of Christ by displaying love for them, whether they are religious or not.  (1 Corinthians 13:1) And we need to teach them, our goal is to show that God loves us and want us to love him.  Every year thousands who previously had little or no interest in religion get baptized because they have to grown to love God. So be positive, and take a loving interest in  all sorts of people.  Listen to them. Try to understand them.  By your example, teach them to be disciples of Christ.

Reaching the Hearts of Non-Religious People - SHARING THE TRUTH WITH PEOPLE FROM ASIA

Worldwide, many publishers are meeting people from nations in Asia, including some who come from places where governments  have put limits on religious activity.  In a number of Asian countries, many have never given serious consideration to the idea of a Creator.  Some are curious and accept a direct offer of a Bible study, but others initially hesitate  to explore new ideas.  What can we do to reach them?  Some experienced publishers  have success by starting a casual conversation, showing personal interest, and then when appropriate relating how their life improved when they started applying a specific Bible principle.

Many people are first attracted to the practical wisdom found in the Bible.  (Ecclesiastes 7:12)  In New York, a sister who visits Mandarin speaking people says:  "I try to take an interest in people and listen to them.  If I learn that they are new  immigrants, I might ask: "How are you settling in?  Have you found work? Are the local people treating you well?"   Sometimes this opens the way to introduce a Bible teaching.  When appropriate, the sister may add:  "What would you say is the key to getting along with people?  May I show you a proverb from the Bible?  It says: 'Beginning a fight  is like opening a flood gate, before the quarrel breaks out, take your leave.'  Dob you think that this is advice would help us get along with others?"  (Proverbs 17:14) Such conversations can help us to identify people who would welcome further visits.

What about those who tell us that they do not believe in God?  A brother with much experience preaching to non-religious people in the Far East explains:  "Typically, when a person here says, 'I don't believe in God,'  he means that he does not believe in worshipping traditional gods.  So I usually agree  that most gods are man-made and are not real. I often read Jeremiah 16:20: 'Can man make gods for himself when they are not really gods?'  Then I ask: 'How could we tell a real god from man-made ones?'  I listen carefully, and then I read Isaiah 41:23: "Tell us what will happen in the future, so that we may know that you are gods.'   Then I show an example of how Jehovah has foretold the future."

Reaching the Hearts of Non-Religious People - REACH THE HEARTS OF PEOPLE

We can reach the hearts of people who usually avoid talking about God by discussing something  That is already close to them.  For example, man marvel at nature. So we might say something like the following:  "You probably know that many inventions cam about when scientists copied things that already existed in nature.  For instance, microphone designers study ears, and camera designers studied eyes.  What comes to your mind when you think of nature? DO you think that it is a marvelous force, a person, or something else?" After listening attentively, we could add:  "When engineers learn from the design of ears and eyes, we might wonder who made the ear, can he not hear? The One who formed the eye, can he not see? .  . ., He is the One who imparts knowledge to people!"  Some scientist have come to a similar conclusion." (Psalm 94:9, 10)  We could then show a video from jw.org under interviews and Experiences" in the series "Viewpoints on the Origin of Life."  (Look under Publications > VIDEOS.) or we could give them either the brochure  Was Life Created? or the brochure  The Origin of Life-Five Questions Worth Asking.

Most people long for a better future. However, many fear that he earth will be destroyed or be made uninhabitable.  A traveling overseer in Norway says that people are are not inclined to talk about God are often willing to talk about world conditions. After greeting people, he says:  "What do you think about our prospects for a better future?  Does our best home lie with politicians, scientists, or someone else?  After listening carefully, he reads or quotes a scripture that points to a bright future. Some are intrigued by the Bible's promise that the earth will last forever and that good people will live on it eternally. - PSALM 37:29; ECCLESIASTES 1:4.

We do well to use a variety of approaches with those we meet. Why? Because each person is unique. What attracts one may repel another.  Some do not mind discussing God or the Bible while others respond better to a more direct indirect approach. In either case, we should take the opportunity to speak to all sorts of people.  ( Read  Romans 1:14-16)   Of course, we keep in mind that Jehovah is the one who makes the truth grow in the hearts of those who are righteously inclined. - 1 CORINTHIANS 3:6, 7.

Reaching the Hearts of Non-Religious People - MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Be Positive.. Every year, there are non-religious people who become Jehovah's Witnesses.  Many already had high moral standards and felt disgusted by religious hypocrisy. Others had low moral standards and many had bad habits  that they needed to abandon.  With Jehovah's help, we can be sure that we all find those who are "rightly disposed for everlasting life." - ACTS 13:48; 1 TIMOTHY 2:3, 4.

Be Kind and Tactful.  Often, people respond to our message, not because of what we say, but because of the way we say it. They appreciate it when we are kind, tactful, and genuinely interested in them.  We do not force them to hear our point of view.  Instead, we try to discern the reasons for their view of religion.  For example, we learn that some do no like talking about religion with a stranger.  Others feel that it is bad manners to ask a person what he thinks about God. Still others feel embarrassed to be seen reading the Bible, especially with one of Jehovah's Witnesses.  Whatever the case, we try to be sensitive to their feelings. - 2 TIMOTHY 2:24.

What can we do if someone seems uncomfortable when we use such words as "Bible," "creation," "God," or "religion"?  We can imitate the apostle Paul and adapt our approach to them.  When speaking with Jews, Paul reasoned from the Scriptures.  However, he spoke with Greek philosophers at the Areopagus, he made no direct reference to the Bible. (Acts 17:2, 3, 22-31) How can we follow Paul's example?  IF you meet a person who does not accept the Bible, it maybe best not make direct references to it when reasoning with him.  If you sense that a person might be uncomfortable being seen reading the Bible with you , try showing him scriptures in a less obvious way, such as an electronic device.

Be Understanding.   We must try to understand the factors that have influenced the people we meet.  (Proverbs 20:5)  Consider again Paul's example.  He grew up among Jews. He surely had to adjust his preaching to the Gentiles, people who knew little or nothing about Jehovah and the Scriptures.  We might have to do some research or consult experienced ones in the congregation so that we can empathize with and understand the people in our territory. - Read 1 CORINTHIANS 9:20-23.

Our goal is to find "deserving" ones. (Matthew 10:11)  To be effective, we must invite people to express their opinions and then listen attentively.  A brother in England asks people for their opinion about how to have a happy marriage, how to raise children, or how to cope with injustice. After listening to their comments, he says, "What do you think of this advice written nearly 2,000 years ago?" Then, without saying the word "Bible," he shows them well-chosen scriptures on his phone.

Reaching the Hearts of Non-Religious People

"I have become  all things to people of all sorts, so that I  might by all possible means save some." - 1 CORINTHIANS 9:22.

FOR thousands of years, the majority of people in the world seemed to have some form of religious belief. But in recent decades a remarkable change has taken place. More and more people do not view themselves  as religious. In fact, in some countries the majority of the population described themselves as not being religious. - MATTHEW 24:12.

Why do a growing number of people consider themselves to be non-religious? Some may be distracted by pleasures or anxieties.  (Luke 8:14)  Some have become atheists.  Others believe in God but think that religion is old-fashioned, irrelevant, and incompatible with science and logical thinking.  They may hear friends, teachers, or media personalities  say that live evolved, but they rarely hear logical reasons for believing God. Others are repelled by clergy who are greedy for the money and power.  In some places, governments officially limit religious activity.

Jesus expects us to "make disciples of people of all the nations." (Matthew 28:19)  How can we help non-religious people to learn to love God and become disciples of God? We must recognize  that a person's reaction to our message may depend on where he was raised.  For example, people with a European background may not respond the same way as those who come from Asia.  Why? In Europe, may know something about the Bible and are familiar with the idea that God  created all things.  But in Asia, the majority of people know little or nothing about the Bible, and they may not believe in a Creator. The purpose of this article is to help us reach the hearts of all those we meet in the ministry, no matter what their background may be.

Go . . . Make Disciples - WHY MAKING DISCIPLES REQUIRES PATIENCE

Even if your ministry seems unproductive, do not give up hope of potential disciples.  Remember that Jesus likened disciple-making to fishing. Fishermen may spend may  hours before they catch any fish.  Often they work late at night or early in the morning, and sometimes they have to sail long distances.  (Luke  5:5)  In like manner some disciple-makers spend many hours patiently  "fishing" at different times and various locations. Why?  To improve their chances of meeting people.  Those who put in extra efforts are often rewarded  by meeting people who are interested in our message. Could you try preaching at a time of day you are more likely to meeting people or at a location where you are more likely to find them? - Read  2 TIMOTHY 4:1, 2.

Why does conducting Bible studies require patience?  One reason is that we need to do more than help the student come to know and love the doctrines found in the Bible.  We need to help the student come to know and love the Author  of the Bible, Jehovah. And in addition to teaching a student what Jesus requires of his disciples, we need to help the student come to know how to live as a true Christian. We must patiently assist him as he struggles to put Bible principles into practice. Some are able to change their thinking and habits in just a few months, others take longer.

A missionary in Peru had an experience that illustrates the benefit of being patient.  "I had studied two books with a Bible student name Raul," says the missionary. "But he still faced serious challenges in his life. He had a stormy marriage, used foul language, and had children who found it difficult to respect him. He came to the meetings regularly, so I continued visiting him to help him and his family. More than three years after I met him, he qualified for baptism."

Jesus told us to "go . . . make disciples of people of all the nations." To fulfill that commission, we often have to speak with people whose way of thinking is very different from our own, including those who do not belong to any religious organization or who may not believe that God exists. The next article considers how we can present the good news to people with different backgr0unds.

Go . . . Make Disciples - DO ALL CHRISTIANS HAVE A PART IN MAKING DISCIPLES?

Every Christian minister is involved in helping to find honest-0hearted ones.  We could liken this work to finding a lost child. In what way?  Consider the real-life example of a three-year-old boy who wandered away from home.  About 500 people were involved in searching for him. Finally, some 20 hours after the child went missing,  a volunteer discovered the little boy in a cornfield.  That volunteer refused to take credit for locating the boy. He said: "It took hundreds of people to find him."

Many people are like that child.  They feel lost.  They have no hope, but they want to help.  (Ephesians 2:12)  Over eight million of us are involved in trying to find these deserving ones. You may not personally; find someone who will study the Bible with you. However, other publishers working the same territory may find someone who wants to learn the truth found in God's Word.  When a brother or sister meets someone who becomes a disciple of Christ, everyone in the search has good reason to rejoice.

Even if you are not personally conducting a  Bible study, you can assist  in making disciples in other ways. For example, you can welcome new ones and befriend them when they come to the Kingdom Hall.  In that way, you can help convince them that love identifies us as true Christians. (John 13:34, 35)  The answers you give during the meetings, though brief, can teach newly associated ones to express their convictions in a sincere and respectful manner.  You can also accompany a new publisher in the ministry an help him to use the Scriptures to reason with people. By doing that, you will be teaching him to imitate Christ. - LUKE 10:25-28.

None of us should think that we need exceptional abilities to teach others to be disciples of Jesus. Why not?  Consider the example of Faustina, who lives in Bolivia. She could not read when she began association with Jehovah's Witnesses. Since then, she has learned to read to a limited degree. She is now baptized, and she loves to teach others. Usually, she conducts five Bible studies each week. Although Faustina cannot yet read as well   as most of her students, she has helped six people to the point of baptism. - LUKE 10:21.

Many Christian are very busy caring for important responsibilities. Still, they make time for conducting Bible studies, and they get much joy from it. Note Melanie's example. She was  a single parent raising her eight-year-old daughter in Alaska.  She also had a full-time job and helped care for a parent with cancer. Melanie was the only Witness in her isolated town.  She use to pray for strength to face the cold and go out preaching because she really wanted to find someone with whom she could study the Bible. Eventually she met Sara, who was thrilled to learn that God has a personal name.  After some time, Sara accepted a Bible study. Says Melanie: "On Friday Evenings, I would be exhausted, but my daughter and I both benefited by going out to conduct that study.  We enjoyed researching answers to Sara's questions, and we were pleased to see her become Jehovah's friend." Sara courageously faced opposition, left her church, and got baptized.

Go . . . Make Disciples - WHAT DOES DISCIPLE-MAKING INVOLVE?

We take the first step in making disciples when we "search out " those with the right heart condition.  (Matthew 10:11)   We prove that we truly are Jehovah's Witnesses by witnessing to all whom we meet. We prove that we are genuine Christians by following Christ's command to preach.

Some people are eager to learn the Bible truths, but many we meet may seem to be indifferent at first.  We may have to stimulate  their interest. To be successful  in the ministry, we need to have a well-thought-out strategy. Select specific subjects that will likely interest those you will meet. Then plan how you will introduce the topic.

For example, you might ask a householder: "Would you mind if I ask your opinion on something?  Many problems facing us today affect people around the world. Do you think that it would take a world government to solve the world's problems?"  Then you could discuss Daniel 2:44.    Or you might say to a neighbor:  "What do you think is the key to raising well-behaved children? I would like to hear your opinion." Then discuss Deuteronomy 6:6, 7.  Whatever subject you choose to discuss, think about the people  who will hear you. Imagine how they will benefit from learning what the Bible really teaches.  When talking with them, it is important that you listen to them and respect their viewpoint. That way you will understand them better, and they will be more likely to listen to you.

Before a person decides to study the Bible, you may need to invest time and effort in making return visits. Why? Because people may not be available when we call on them again. Also, you may need to return  several times before the householder feels comfortable enough with you to accept a Bible study. Remember, a plant is more likely to grow when it is watered regularly.  Similarly, an interested person's love for Jehovah and Christ is more likely to grow when we regularly discuss God's Word with that person.

Go . . .Make DIsciples

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations." - MATTHEW 28:19.

THE apostles must have been full of anticipation as they gathered on a mountainside. Jesus had, after his resurrection, arranged  for them to meet him at that location.  (Matthew 28:16)  That was perhaps the occasion when "he appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time." (1 Corinthians 15:6) Why had Jesus called his disciples  to this meeting? To give them an exciting mission;  "Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations." -Read MATTHEW 28:18-20.

The disciples who heard Jesus' words became part of the first-century Christian congregation.  The primary mission of that congregation was to make more disciples of Christ.  Today, there are tens of thousands of true Christian congregations throughout the earth, and the primary mission of those congregations remains the same. In this article, we will consider four questions:  Why is disciple making so important?  What does it involve? Do all Christians have a part in making disciples? And why do we need patience for this work?

WHY IS DISCIPLE MAKING SO IMPORTANT?

Why is the disciple-makings work so important?  Because only disciples of Christ can be friends of God. In addition, those who follow Christ improve their lives now and have the hope of enjoying endless life in the future. (Read 14:6; 17:3)   Certainly, Jesus had entrusted us with an  important responsibility, but we do not do this work by ourselves. The apostle Paul wrote about himself and certain close associations: "We  are God's fellow workers."  (1 Corinthians 3:9) What a privilege Jehovah and Christ have give to imperfect humans!

The disciple-making work can bring us much joy. Consider the example of Ivan and his wife, Matilde, in Colombia.  They witnessed to a young man named Davier, who told them:  "I want to make changes in my life, but I can't." Davier was a prizefighter who used drugs, drank excessively, and lived with his girlfriend, Erika. Ivan explains:  "We began visiting him in his isolated village which meant riding our bicycles many hours along muddy road.  After noticing improvements in Davier's behavior and attitude, Erika joined  in the Bible study."  In time, Davier gave up drugs, drinking, and boxing.  He also married Erika.  Says Matilde:  "When Davier and Erika got baptized in 2016, we remembered that Davier use to say, 'I want to change, but I can't.'  We just couldn't hold back our tears." Without a doubt, we feel intense when we help people become disciples of Christ.

Keep Worhipping Jehovah When Under Ban - NEVER STOP WORSHIPPING JEHOVAH

Our chief adversary, Satan the Devil, will not stop trying to persecute Jehovah's faithfuls servants.  (1 Peter 5:8; Revelation 2:10)  Satan and his agents will try to ban our worship of Jehovah.  However, there is no reason for us to be paralyzed by fear! (Deuteronomy 7:21) Jehovah is on our side, and he will continue to support us even if our work is banned. - Read 2 CHRONICLES 32:7, 8.

May we have the same resolve s did our first-century brothers, who told the rulers of  their day: "Whether it is right in the sight of God's to listen to you rather than to God, judge for yourselves. But as for us, we cannot stop speaking  about the things we have seen and heard." - ACTS 4:19, 20.

Keep Worshpping Jehovah When Under Ban - TRAPS TO AVOID

Be cautious about sharing information.  During a ban, we must recognize when it is "time to be silent." (Ecclesiastes 3:7)  We must safeguard sensitive information, such as the names of our brothers and sisters, the locations where we meet, how we carry out  our ministry, and how we receive spiritual food.  We would not reveal these facts to the secular authorities; nor would we  share them with well-meaning friends or relatives  in our country or in other countries. If we did fall into this trap, we would put the safety of our brothers at risk. -Read PSALM 39:1.

Do not allow issues to divide us.  Satan knows that a  divided house cannot stand. (Mark 3:24, 25) He will constantly try to cause divisions among us. In that way, he hopes that we will start fighting one another instead of fighting him.

Even mature Christians need to be on guard not to fall into this trap. Consider the examples of two anointed sisters, Gertrud Poetzinger and Elfriede Lohr.  They were imprisoned together with other Christian sisters in a Nazi concentration camp. Gertrud  became jealous when Elfriede gave encouraging talks to the other sisters in the camp. Later, Gertrud felt ashamed and pleaded with Jehovah for help. She wrote:  "We have to learn to accept  it when others have greater abilities or are more highly favored."  How did she overcome her jealousy?  Gertrud focused on Elfriede's good qualities and pleasant disposition.  In this way she regained he good relationship with Elfriede. Both survived the concentration camp and served Jehovah faithfully until they finished  their earthly course. If we work hard to overcome differences with our brothers, we will avoid the trap of disunity.

Avoid being presumptuous.  If we heed the direction we receive from trusted, responsible brothers, we will avoid problems. (1 Peter 5:5) For example, in a land where the work is under ban, the responsible brothers had directed that the publishers  not leave printed material in the ministry. Yet, a pioneer brother in that location felt that he knew better and distributed literature.  What was the result? Shortly after he and some others finished a period of informal witnessing, they were questioned by the police. Apparently, officials had followed them and were able to retrieve the literature they had distributed.  What do we learn from this experience?  We need to follow direction even if we feel we know better.  Jehovah always blesses s when we cooperate with the brothers whom he has appointed to take the lead among us. - HEBREWS 13:7, 17.

Do not make unnecessary rules.  If elders make unnecessary rules, they will create a burden for others. Brother Juraj Kaminsky recalled what took place during a ban in former Czechoslovakia:  "After the responsible brothers and many elders were arrested, some of those taking the lead in congregations and circuits began prescribing rules of conduct for the publishers, making lists of dos and don'ts." Jehovah has not given us authority to make personal decisions for others.  Someone who makes needless rules is not protecting his brother's safety-he is trying to become the master of his brother's faith.  - 2 CORINTHIANS 1:24.

Keep Worshipping Jehovah When Under Ban - How Will We Worship Under Ban?

How can you continue to worship under while under ban?  The branch office will give the local elders instructions and practical suggestions about  how to receive spiritual food, how to meet together for worship, and how to preach the good news.  If the branch cannot contact the elders, then the elders will help you  and all in the congregation to continue your worship of Jehovah.  They will give direction in harmony with the guidance found in the Bible and in our Christian publications. - MATTHEW 28:19; ACTS 5:29; HEBREWS 10:24, 25.

Jehovah has promises that his servants will be well-fed spiritually.b (Isaiah 65:13, 14; Luke 12:42-44)  So you can be certain that his organization will do everything possible to provide spiritual encouragement you need.  What can you do? When under ban, find a good place to hide your Bible and any other spiritual food you might have.  Be careful never to leave  such precious  material-whether is is in printed or electronic form-in a location where it could easily be discovered.  Each of us must take practical steps to remain spiritually strong.

What about weekly meetings for worship? The elders will arrange for you to attend meetings in a way that will not attract unwanted attention.  They may direct you to meet in small groups, and they will likely change the meeting times and locations frequently. You can keep everyone who attends safe by speaking quietly when coming to or leaving the meetings.  You may also need to dress in a way that does not attract attention.

Regarding the preaching work, circumstances will vary from one location to another.  But we love Jehovah and enjoy telling others about his Kingdom, so we will find a way to preach. (Luke 8:1; Acts 4:29) Commenting on the preaching of Jehovah's Witnesses in the former Soviet Union, historian Emily Baran said:  "When  the state told believers that they could not evangelize their faith to others, Witnesses chatted [with} their neighbors , coworkers, and friends.  When these actions landed them in labor camps, Witnesses sought out converts among their fellow prisoners."  Despite the ban, our brothers in the former Soviet Union did not stop preaching. If ever the preaching work is banned where you live, may you have the same determination!

Keep Worshipping Jehovah When Under Ban - SHOULD I MOVE TO ANOTHER LAND?

If the government where you live bans our worship, you many wonder if you should  move to a country where you can serve Jehovah freely.  This is a personal decision that no one else can make for you.  Some might find it helpful to consider what the Christians in the first century did when they  were persecuted.  After enemies stoned Stephen to death, the disciples in Jerusalem moved throughout Judea and Samaria and even as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch.  (Matthew 10:23; Acts 8:1; 11:19)  However, others might note that after another wave of persecution afflicted the first-century Christians, the apostle Paul decided not to move away from areas where the preaching work was opposed.  Instead, he risked his safety to spread good news and to strengthen the brothers in cities that were suffering intense persecution. - ACTS 14:19-23.

What do we learn from these accounts? Each family head must make a personal decision, he should prayerfully  and carefully consider his family's circumstances and the positive and negative effects a move might have on them.  In this matter, each Christian must "carry his own load." (Galatians 6:5) We should not judge others for the decision that they make.

Keep Worshipping Jehovah When Under Ban - WILL A BAN END OUR WORSHIP WITH JEHOVAH?

Mere human opposers cannot stamp out the worship of the Almighty God, Jehovah.  Many have tried and failed.  Consider what happened during World War  II.  At that time, governments in many countries intensely persecuted God's people.  The work of Jehovah's Witnesses was banned not only by the Nazi party in Germany but also by governments in Australia, Canada,  and other lands. Yet, note what took place. In 1939 when the war began, there were 72,475 publishers worldwide. Reports showed that by the end of the war in 1945, with Jehovah's blessing, there were 156,299 publishers. The number of publishers had more than doubled!

Rather than intimidate us, opposition can motivate us to serve Jehovah more fully. For example, one couple who had a young child lived in a country  where the government decided to ban our worship. Instead of shrinking back in fear, the couple began regularly pioneering. The wife even quit her well-paying job to do so.  The husband said that the ban made many people curious about Jehovah's Witnesses.  As a result, he found it easier to start Bible studies.  The ban had a positive effect on others as well. And elder in the same  country commented that many who had stopped serving Jehovah began to attend meeting and were reactivated.

When our enemies ban our worship, the hope to make us afraid to serve Jehovah.  In addition to the ban, they may circulate  false stories, send officials to search our homes, drag us to court, or even imprison some of us. They hope that we will be terrified because they managed to put a small number of us in prison.  If we were to allow them to instill fear in our heart, we might even begin to "ban" our own worship.  We would not want to become like those described at Leviticus 26:36, 37. (Read.)  We will not allow fear to cause us to reduce or to stop our spiritual activities. We trust completely in Jehovah and refuse to panic.  (Isaiah  28:167)  We prayerfully seek Jehovah's guidance. We know that with  his backing, not even the most powerful human government can prevent us from faithfully worshipping our God.  - HEBREWS 13:6.
