HELP FOR THOSE WHO GRIEVE - Coping with Grief - What You Can Do Today

 5.BE FLEXIBLE

* Recognize that everyone grieves differently. Ultimately, you will need to determine the strategy that works best for you.

* Many find that expressing their grief to others helps them deal with it, while others prefer not to express their grief.  If you need to confide in someone but are hesitant  to do so, you might find it easier to start small by expressing some of your feelings to a close friend.

* Some people find that crying helps them deal with their grief, while others seem to cope even though they cry less.

PRINCIPLE:  "Each heart knows its own bitterness." - Proverbs 14:10, New International Version.

6. AVOID SELF-DESTRUCTIVE HABITS

Some bereaved ones try to erase their emotional pain through the misuse of alcohol or drugs.  Such "escape" is self-destructive.  Any relief a person my feel is short-lived, only to be followed by major negative consequences. Try harmless ways to calm your anxieties.

PRINCIPLE: "Let us cleanse  ourselves of every defilement." - 2 CORINTHIANS 7:1.

 2. WATCH YOUR DIET, AND MAKE TIME FOR EXERCISE

* A balanced diet will help with the stress that comes from dealing with grief.  Try to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

* Drink plenty of water and other healthful liquids.

* If your appetite is low, eat small portions more frequently.  You may also ask your doctor about nutrition supplements.

* Brisk walks and other forms of exercise can lessen  negative emotions. Exercise can provide time to reflect on your loss or take a break from thinking about it.

Principle: "No one has ever hated his own body but he feeds it and takes care of it." - EPHESIANS 5:29.

3. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP

* Sleep is always important, but this is especially so for those who are grieving, as grief can bring extra fatigue.

* Be careful with the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume, as both can interfere with your sleep.

Principle: "Better is a handful o rest than two handfuls of hard work and chasing after the wind." - ECCLESIASTES 4:6.

HELP FOR THOSE WHO GRIEVE - What You Can Do Today

If you look for advice on dealing with grief, you will likely find a myriad of ideas-some more helpful than others. Perhaps that is because, as mentioned  earlier, everyone grieves differently .  What works for one person may not work for someone else.

Even so, there are some basic guidelines that have proved practical for many.  They are frequently cited by grief counselors, and they echo timeless principles found in an ancient book of wisdom, the Bible.

1: ACCEPT SUPPORT FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS

* Some experts consider to be the most important factor in getting through grief.  Yet, at times, you may want to be alone. You may even feel irritated  at those who are trying to help you.  This is normal.

* Do not feel that you must always be around others, but do  not completely push them away either.  After all, you may need their support in the future. Kindly let others know what you need at the moment and what you do not.

* According to your needs, find a balance between time with other people and time alone.

Principle: "Two are better than one . . . For if one of them falls, the other can help his partner up." - ECCLESIASTES 4:9, 10.

HELP FOR THOSE WHO GRIEVE - WILL I EVER BE HAPPY AGAIN?

WHAT TO EXPECT.  The intensity of grief does not last forever, it eventually subsides.  This is not to say tat one full "recovers" or forgets his or her loved one. However, little by little, sharp pangs of grief soften. They may resurface when certain memories arise unexpectedly or at certain times such as anniversaries. But eventually, most people come to a  point of emotional balance and can focus once again on life's daily activities.  This is especially so when the bereaved person has the support of family members or friends and takes reasonable steps to cope.

How long will it take?  For some, the worst may be over in a matter of months.  For many, a year or two may pass before they notice themselves feeling better. And some need even more time.  "For me, recalls Alejandro, "deep grieving continued for about three years."

Be patient with yourself. Take one day at a time, move at your own pace, and know that the pangs of grief do not last forever.  That said, are there things you can do to erase your grief now and even prevent your grief from being unnecessarily prolonged?

Difficulty handling essential tasks. Recalls Ivan:  "After Eric's death we had to notify  not only relatives and friends but also others, such as his employer and his landlord.  There were also numerous legal documents to fill out.  Then we had to go through Eric's personal items. All of this required  focus at a time when we were fatigued mentally, physically, and emotionally."

For some, however, the real challenge  comes later, when they need to handle matters that were previously handled by their loved one.  That was Tina's experience.  She explains:  "Timo had always cared for our banking and other business matters.  Now this became my responsibility, which only added to my already heightened levels of stress.  Could I really handle all of this without making a mess?'

The above-mentioned challenges-emotional, mental, and physical-may paint a daunting picture of grief.  The reality is the pain following the loss of a loved one can be intense, but knowing this in advance may help recently bereaved ones to cope. Remember, too, not everyone experiences all of grief's potential effect.  Furthermore, there may be some comfort for bereaved ones in knowing that the intense feelings associated with grief are normal.

Troublesome thinking patterns.  There may be  periods during which one's thoughts become erratic or illogical.  For instance, a bereaved person may imagine that the diseased one can be heard, felt or seen.  Or the bereaved one may find it difficult to concentrate or to remember things.   Tina says:  "Sometimes I'd be having a conversation, but I'd find that my mind wasn't there!  It was racing, going over the events surrounding Timo's death.  The inability to focus was of" itself distressing."

A desire to withdraw.  A grieving person may feel irritable or awkward in the presence of others. Says Kostas:  "In the company of couples, I felt like a fifth wheel.  But I also felt out of place with single people."  Ivan's wife, Yolanda, remembers:  "It was so difficult to be around people who complained about problems that seemed trivial  compared to ours! Then, too, there were those who would tell us how well their children were doing.  I was happy for them, yet at the same time. I found it hard to listen to them. My husband and I understood that life goes on, but we simply don't have the desire or patience to deal with it."

Health problems.  Changes in appetite, weight, and sleep patterns are common. Aaron recalls the year following the death of his father: "I definitely had trouble sleeping.  I would wake up at the same time every night thinking about my father's death."

Alejandro recalls having mysterious health problems:  "Several times I was examined by a doctor and was assured  that I was healthy.  I suspected that grief was causing my physical symptoms."  Those symptoms  eventually disappeared. Even so, Alejandro's  decision to see a doctor was wise. Grieving can lower the immune system, aggravate an existing health problem, or even cause a new one.

HELP FOR THOSE WHO GRIEVE? -What to Expect

Although some experts talk  about grief occuring in set stages, each individual grieves in his or her own unique way.  Do the differences in reactions to grief mean that some people are less saddened by their loss or are "suppressing" their feelings? Not necessarily.  While acknowledging and expressing grief can have a healing effect, there is not one "right way" to grieve.  Much may depend on an individual's culture, personality, and life experiences, as well as the nature of the loss.

HOW BAD WILL IT GET?

Bereaved ones may not know what to expect following the death of a loved one. However, certain emotions and challenges are common and can often be anticipated. Consider the following:

Feeling emotionally overwhelmed. Crying spells, yearning for the deceased, and abrupt mood changes may be experienced.  Emotions may be further charged by vivid memories and dreams. Initially, through, the primary reaction may be shock and disbelief.  Tina recalls her response when her husband Timo, pass away  unexpectedly .  She says "Initially, I was numb.  I couldn't cry at first. I was so overwhelmed that at times I found it difficult to breathe.  I just couldn't believe what had happened."

Bouts of anxiety, anger, and guilt are also common. "For some time after the death of our 24-year old son Eric, "says Ivan, "my wife, Yolanda, and I were so angry!  This surprised us, since we had never before thought   of ourselves as angry people.  We felt guilty too, as we questioned whether we could have done more to help our son." Alejandro, who wife died after a prolonged illness, also experience  feelings of guilt.  "At first I felt that God was allowing me to suffer this much, I must be a bad person. Than I felt guilty, as if I were blaming God for what happened."  And Kostas, quoted in the preceding article says: "A few times I even felt angry at Sophia for dying.  Then I felt guilty for feeling that way.  After all, it was not her fault.

HELP FOR THOSE WHO GRIEVE

The Agony of Grieve

"Sophia and I had been married for more than 39 years when a prolonged illness took her life.  I had plenty of support from friends, and I kept myself busy. But for a full year, I felt as if I were torn in half.  My emotions would rise and fall, twist and turn. Even now, almost three years since her death, deep emotional pain occasionally strikes, and often without warning." -Kostas.

Have you lost a loved one in death?  If son, you may relate to Kosta's  expressions. Few things cause more stress or heartache than the death of a mate, relative, or dear friend. Experts who study the agony caused by grief agree with that. An article published in The American Journal of Psychiatry states that "death is the most obviously permanent and extreme form of loss."  Faced with  the unbearable pain such a loss brings, one who griefs may wonder:  'How long will these feelings last?  Will I ever be happy again? How can I find relief?'

Answers to these questions are considered in this issue of Awake!  The next article will discuss  what  you might anticipate if you have recently been bereaved.  The subsequent articles will explore ways that may help you to lower the intensity of your grief.

We sincerely hope that what follows will be of comfort and practical help to anyone experiencing the agony of grief.

HOW THE CHALLENGE WILL BE FULLY OVERCOME - HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM KINGDOM RULE?

A first step to becoming a subject of God's Kingdom is education.  Indeed, Jesus said in prayer to God:  "This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ." - John 17:3

When people come to know Jehovah God as a Person, they benefit in many wa6s.  Consider just two:  First, they develop strong faith in him.  That faith which is based on evidence, convinces them that God's Kingdom is a reality and that its rule is near.  (Hebrews 11:1)  Second, they grow in love for God and for neighbor.  Love for God impels them to obey him with a willing heart. Love for neighbor moves them to apply Jesus' words that often called the Golden Rule.  It states: "Do unto other what you would want them to do unto you."-Luke 6:31.

Like a loving Father, our Creator wants the very best for us to experience what the Bible calls "the real life."  (1 Timothy 6:19)  Life today is not "the real life."  For millions, it is little more than existence-and is perilous at that.  To give you a preview  of that "real life," consider some of the wonderful things that God's Kingdom will do for its subjects.

HOW THE CHALLENGE WILL BE FULLY OVERCOME - HOW WILL GOD'S KINGDOM TAKE CONTROL?

The answer involves these four important facts:

1.  The Kingdom will not operate through or be represented by the political leaders  or the president of the world.

2.  The world's political leaders , in an attempt to cling to power, will foolishly defy rule by God's  Kingdom. -Psalm 2:2-9.

3. God's Kingdom will need to destroy the political kingdoms that want to continue dominating mankind.  (Daniel 2:14; Revelation 19:17-21)  This final global conflict is called Armageddon. -Revelation 16:14, 16)

4. All who willingly submit to God's  Kingdom will be preserved through Armageddon into a peaceful new world.  They will make up what the Bible calls "a great crowd," likely numbering into the millions. - Revelation 7:9, 10, 13, 14.

While Jesus was on the earth, he gave us a preview of what he will do as King Of God's Kingdom. He healed the sick and the disabled.  (Matthew 4:24)  He fed many thousands.  (Mark 6:35-44) He even controlled the natural elements. - Mark 4:37-41.

Above all, Jesus taught people how to live together in peace and harmony.  All who humbly apply his teachings develop personality traits that will enable them to live happily under his Kingdom forever.  No other educator can accomplish that.  Fine examples of Jesus' teachings can found is what is known as the Sermon on the Mount, found in Matthew chapters 5-7.  Why not read it? The words themselves are simple . But the message is profound and each truly touches the heart.

WHEN WILL GOD'S KINGDOM COME?

Those prophecies began to be fulfilled in the year 1914.  Indeed, historians, statesmen, and writers have commented of how the world changed after that  year.  For example, Danish historian Peter Munch wrote:  "The outbreak of the war in 1914 is the great turning point in the history of humanity.  From a bright epoch of progress, . . . we entered an age of disaster, horror, and hatred, with insecurity everywhere."

On the positive side, those conditions are like a storm before the calm.  They show that Kingdom rule over all the earth is near.  In fact, Jesus included this positive element in h "is sign of the end:  "This good news of the Kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come." -Matthew 24:14.

That good news is a central theme of the message of Jehovah's Witnesses.  Indeed, their leading  journal is entitled The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah's Kingdom.  Now available in more than 338 languages.  (Those languages are the languages over in other countries so they can understand)  The Watchtower regularly discusses the wonderful things that God's Kingdom will do for mankind and the earth.

HOW THE CHALLENGE WILL BE FULLY OVERCOME - UNDER GOD'S KINGDOM "PEACE WILL ABOUND"

Soon the long awaited Kingdom of God -a world government set up by God-will bring global peace and harmony to the earth.  "Peace will abound," as promised at Psalm 72:7. But when will the Kingdom take charge?  How will do so? And how can you benefit from the Kingdom rule?

WHEN WILL GOD'S KINGDOM COME?

The Bible foretold a number of striking events that would signal that God's Kingdom is coming soon.  Those events make up a composite "sign" That includes international warfare, famine, disease, many earthquakes, and an increase in lawlessness. - Matthew 24:3, 7, 12; Luke 21:11; Revelation 6:2-8

Another prophecy states:  "In the last days, critical times hard to deal with  will be her. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, . . .disobedient to parents, ungrateful, disloyal, having no natural affection, not open to agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, . . . puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God."  (2 Timothy 3:1-4)  Traits such as these have always been manifest to some extent.  But now they are commonplace.

Conclusion of "Let Your Kingdom Come"

In fulfillment of Jesus' prayers, God's Kingdom will fully accomplish God's will on earth. Under it, all mankind will learn how to care for the planet so that it will be healthy again and teem with life.

Above all, God's Kingdom will educated its subjects. All will be taught the same standards. There will be no discord no division.  "They will not cause any harm or any ruin . . . because the earth will certainly be filled with the knowledge of Jehovah as the waters cover the sea," says Isaiah 11:9.

Earth's inhabitants will truly be what the United Nations would like people to be-peace-loving global citizens.  "They find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace," says Psalm 37:11.  In time, words like "crime," "pollution,"  "poverty," and "war" will disappear from our vocabulary. But when will this happen? Yes, when will God's Kingdom take charge?  How will it do so? And can you benefit from its rule? Let us now see.

KEY POINT

GOD'S KINGDOM IS A WORLD GOVERNMENT CREATED BY GOD. ITS SUBJECTS WILL NOT BE SEPARATED BY POLITICAL BORDERS BUT WILL BE FULLY UNITED AND AT PEACE.

"Let Your Kingdom Come"

Jesus Christ had God's Kingdom in mind  when he said in his model prayer:  "Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."  (Matthew 6:9, 30)  Yes, God's Kingdom will ensure  that God's will is done on earth, not the will of power-hungry or selfish humans.

God's Kingdom is also called "the Kingdom of the heavens."  (Matthew 5:3)  The reason?  While it will rule over the earth, it will not rule from the earth but will rule from heaven.  Than what that means.  This world government will not require material for financial support.  What a relief it will be  for its human subjects!

As the term "kingdom " suggests, God's Kingdom is a royal government. It has a King-Jesus Christ- who received his authority from God.  Concerning Jesus, the Bible says:

"The government shall be on his shoulder . . . of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end." - Isaiah 9:6, 7, King James Version.

"To him there were given rulership, honor, and a kingdom, that the people, nations, and language groups should all serve him.  His rulership . . . will not pass away." -Daniel 7:14.

"The Kingdom of the Word has become the Kingdom of our Lord [God] and of his Christ." - Revelation 11:15.

A GOVERNMENT THAT WILL MEET THE CHALLENGE -"OF . . .Peace There Shall Be No End"

The United Nations is promoting the concept of global citizenship.  Goals include encouraging international cooperation, respecting human rights, and protecting our planet. The reason? As expressed by Maher Nasser in the UN Chronicle,  "climate change, organized crime, rising inequalities, unresolved conflicts, mass displacement of people, global terrorism, infectious,  and similar threats do not recognized . . . borders."

Others have gone even further, advocating a world government.  They include the Italian philosopher, even so, if the human family is to enjoy true peace and harmony, we have to be united. But how can that goal be achieved?  Is it even realistic?  The Bible's answers is yes. It can and will be achieved. How?  Not by a world government made up of corruptible politicians.  Rather, it will be a government of God's making.  What is more, that government will express his right to rule over his creation. What is that government? The Bible gives its name --The Kingdom of God," or God's Kingdom. - Luke 4:3.

Conclusion of THEY FACED THE CHALLENGE -Anres

I soon realized that I could not make the needed changes without help, especially when I received threats from my fellow inmates who did not like what I was doing.  So I prayed for strength and wisdom, and Jehovah helped me.  In fact, I was even able to go on the offensive, as it were, by speaking to other prisoners about the Bible.

When my release came, i was so nervous that I actually wanted to stay in prison longer!  As I was leaving, a number of inmates waved goodbye.  Some even said affectionately, "Go home, little shepherd.

It scares me to think about how my life might have turned out had I not allowed God to educate me.  I am very, very thankful that God loves me and did not consider me a lost cause.

WHEN A PERSON IS HUMBLE AND HONEST, RECOGNIZES THAT HE HAS TO MAKE CHANGES, AND WANTS TO DO SO, THE BIBLE CAN HELP HIM. IT HAS AN EXCELLENT TRACK RECORD.
AMEN!  I  made changes in my life as well, am happy I did,  and am so very, very blessed indeed to have Jehovah God in my life and never want to live without him.

THEY FACED THE CHALLENGE -Andres

Andres: I was born and raised in a poor neighborhood where drugs, extortion, murder, and prostitution were common. My father was an alcoholic and a cocaine addict.  He and my mother were always fighting, verbally and physically.

At an early age, I began drinking alcohol and using drugs.  I spent most of my time on the streets, stealing and then selling what I stole.  As I got older, my father, in a misguided attempt to draw close to me, taught me how to smuggle drugs and other illegal products into the country and sell them.  I made a lot of money - fast.  Then one day the police came to my home.  They arrested me, and I was sentenced to five years in prison  for attempted murder.

One morning an announcement over the prison loudspeaker invited inmates  to a Bible discussion held by Jehovah's Witnesses.  I decided to attend.  What I heard made sense, so I began to study the Bible with the Witnesses.  They did not water down the Scriptures but showed me God's high moral standards.

Most of my relatives were unhappy>  Their lives were full of problems. But that was not the case with  the family of my uncles. I knew that they were good people, and I knew that they lived by Bible principles. In fact, I had once learned from them that God's name was Jehovah. So not long after the shoot-out, I prayed to Jehovah, addressing him by name and asking him to help me.  To my astonishment, the very next day, one of Jehovah's Witnesses knocked on my door!  He became my Bible teacher.

I soon faced a big challenge. My old friends often phoned, asking me to hang out with them.  Though it was not easy, I said no. I was determined to continue my Bible study, and I am glad I did!  My life improved dramatically, and I found true happiness.

I remember telling God in prayer that I had once been willing  to spend ten years in prison to earn respect as a gang member.  So I asked him to allow me to serve him for at least ten years as a full-time minister in order to help others as i had been helped.  God answered my prayer, for I  have spent 17 years as a full-time minister. And I  might add, I never went to prison.

Many of my former friends, however, are serving prison sentences.  Others are dead. Looking back, I am most grateful to my Witness relatives. They were willing to be different, to live by the Bible. I grew to respect them more than I ever expected  anyone in the gang.  Above all, I am thankful to God for teaching me the very best way to live.

THEY FACED THE CHALLENGE - The Stories of Ricardo and Andres

Education based on the Bible has amazing power to improve lives.  Consider two examples of this: Ricardo and Andres

RICARDO:  At the impressionable age of 15, I joined a gang. My new friends had a big influence on me.  In fact, it became my goal to spend ten years in prison!  That may sound foolish. But in my neighborhood, those who had spent time in prison were admired and respected.  And I wanted to be like them.

I experienced all that is associated with gang life, including drugs, sex, and violence.  One night I was involved in a shoot-out.  I thought I was going to be killed, but I escaped unharmed. After that, I began to think more seriously about my life and my goals, and I decided to change. But how? Where could I find help?

EDUCATION THAT PROVIDES MORAL AND SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE

Love can also move people to make sacrifices, even lifestyle changes, for the benefit of others.  For example, when a man we will call George became a grandfather, he dearly wanted to spend time with his grandson, but there was a problem.  George smoked heavily, and his son-in-law did not want him smoking around the baby.  What did George do?  Even though he had smoked for 50 years, he gave up the habit for the sake of his grandson.  Yes, what power love has.

Love is a quality that we learn. Parents play a big role in teaching their children how to love.  They feed and protect their children and come to their aid when they are hurt or sick.  God parents talk with their children and teach them.  They also discipline their children, which includes teaching them sound principles of right and wrong. Additionally, good parents set a fine example, becoming  role models for their children.

Sadly, though, some parents fall in their responsibilities.  Does this mean that their children are doomed to failure?  Not at all! Even many older people, including  some who grew up in dysfunctional families, have made amazing changes in their lives, becoming caring and trustworthy citizens.  As we will see in the following article, that even includes some who may have been viewed by others as beyond  reform!

KEY POINT

THE BIBLE CAN PROVIDE WHAT SECULAR EDUCATION CANNOT-TRUSTWORTHY MORAL AND SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE

The Bible frankly acknowledges that some people will simply refuse to change for the better.  The wicked will continue to "act wickedly," says Daniel 2:10.  Does that  reality doom our prospects for lasting peace and safety?  If the future were just in human hands, our prospects would be  (note: and are, for now) grim indeed.  But as we will see, that is not the case. In fact, the opposite is true-our future can be very bright@

EDUCATION THAT PROVIDES MORAL AND SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE

The Bible is like a mirror.  When we look into it, we see our limitations and weaknesses more clearly.  James 1:23-25)  But the Bible does even more. It helps us to made needed changes, to develop qualities that foster true peace and harmony.  Those qualities include goodness, kindness, patience, self-control, and love.  Love is even  called "a perfect bond of union." (Colossians 3:14)  Why is love so special? Note what the Bible says about this quality.

"Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous.  It does not brag, does not get puffed up [with pride], does not behave indecently, does not look for  its own interests, does not become provoked. It does  not keep account of the injury. It does not rejoice over unrighteousness [badness], but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, . . . endures all things, love never fails." -1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

"Love does not work evil to one's neighbor." Romans 13:10.

Above all things, have intense love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins." - 1 Peter 4:8.

When you are with people who love you, how do you feel?  Safe? Secure?  Relaxed?   Yes, you know that they want the best for you, that they would never intentionally hurt you.

Moral Education

While on a school trip, some teenage boys were  accused of sexually assaulting another male student. All attended a prestigious private school in Canada. After the incident, Leonard Stern wrote  in the Ottawa Citizen newspaper:  "All the advantages of intellect and education and social class do not indicate young people against making bad moral decisions."

Stern also stated:  "You'd think the single greatest goal of parenting would be the promotion of a child's moral development.  The reality is that many parents seem more concerned  about academic  or material advancement."

To be sure, schooling is important. But even the best secular  education cannot help a person to combat wrong desires or bad inclinations. Where, then, can we get an education that addresses those areas - that provides moral guidance?

Getting to the Root of Our Problems - BIBLE WISDOM PROTECTS US!

A wise man once said that "wisdom is proved righteous by all its children," or results.  (Luke 7:35)  An example of that wisdom is found at (Isaiah 2:22), which says:  "For  your own sakes, quit trusting in mere man."   That sound advice can protect us from false hopes and unrealistic expectations.  Kenneth, who lives in a North American c9ity plagued with violence, says:  "One politician after another promises to make things better, but they cannot.  Their failures area  regular reminder of Bible wisdom."

Daniel quoted earlier, writes:  "Evert day convinces me more that humans cannot govern well. . . .Trusting in your bank account or in some pension scheme is no guarantee of a good retirement.  I have seen people  suffer terrible frustration  in this regard."

The Bible does even more than protect us from unrealistic expectations. It also  give us home, as we will go on and see.

Even if by some miracle we could cure mankind's hurtful traits, we would still be unable to  make the world safe and secure for all.  The reason?  Our human limitations.

The simple truth is this:  "It does not belong to man . . . even to direct his step."  (Jeremiah 10:23)  Yes, we were not created  to govern ourselves. In fact, we were no more created to rule over our fellow humans than we were created to live under water or in outer space!

Consider this:  Do people in general like to have their equals tell them how to live or which moral values to live by?  Do people like  others to dictated how they should view such things as abortion or capital punishment or how they should discipline their children?  These are just some of the issues that divide people.  So, humbling though it might be, what the Bible says makes sense.  We simply do not have the ability or the moral authority to rule over our fellow humans.  Where, then, can we turn for help!

The most reasonable answer is for us to turn to our Creator.  After all, he made us!  And contrary to what some may think, he has not forgotten us.  In fact, his concern for us is revealed in the wisdom found in the Bible.  When we understand that unique book, we also understand ourselves better. And we can make sense of mankind's sad history. We can see why, as German philosopher once wrote, "Peoples and governments never have learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it."

Getting to the Root of Our Problems

Daniel, who lives in a South American country that has  a failing economy, says:  "We once had normal lives. We did not dread armed robbery.  But now there no longer exists a peaceful town or village.  The failing economy has revealed what many people are really like-greedy and lacking in respect for the life or property of others."

A man who we will call Elias  fled from a conflict in the Middle East and later studied the Bible.  He states:  "Many young men from my home city were encouraged by their families and the political-religious system to get involved in the war and be considered heroes. Those on the opposing side were told the very same thing!  All of this made me see how sad it is to put faith in human rulers."

An ancient book of wisdom rightly states:

"The inclination of the heart of man is bad from his youth up." -Genesis  8:21.

"The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate. Who can know it?" -Jeremiah 17:9.

"Out of the heart come wicked reasonings, murders, . . .sexual immorality, thefts, false testimonies." -Matthew 15:19.

Mankind has been unable to find a cure for the hurtful traits that lurk within us. In fact, those traits appear to be getting worse, as reflected in the problems mentioned in the preceding article.  (2 Timothy 3:1-5) And this is so despite the vast amount of information that is available today, not to mention our unprecedented ability to communicate with others!  So why can we not make the world peaceful and safe!  Are we asking  more of ourselves than we can give?  Are we trying to do the impossible?

Getting to the Root of Our Problems

Note: I will be moving to Arkansas in  first part of February, so if I miss  not doing a few blogs, it means that I am packing and getting things ready. I am on my own so, please forgive and do not give up. After I move, I will have my computer up and going as soon as I can. This blog is too important to me. Please have patience.

Do you believe that mankind can solve the many problems that rob us of peace and security and that threaten our future?   To be effective, any cure must surely address the root causes of our troubles, not just the symptoms.

To illustrate, a patient named Tom was sick and later died. Why did he die?  "When his first symptoms  appeared , no one thought to search for the underlying cause," wrote the doctor whose hospital  received Tom shortly before he  died. It seems that Tom's earlier caregivers had simply give him medication to make him feel better.

Are humans taking a similar approach to the world's ills?  For example, in fighting crime, governments enact laws, install video surveillance, and strengthen police forces.  But these measures, while effective  to some extent, do  not address underlying causes.  After all, behavior usually reflects attitudes, beliefs, and desires.

Threats to Our Safety and Security

This generation enjoys unprecedented technological, scientific and financial resources . . . And yet this is perhaps the first generation to take the world to the brink of a political, economic, and environmental systems breakdown." -The Global Risks Report 2018, World Economic Forum.

WHY ARE MANY INFORMED PEOPLE CONCERNED ABOUT OUR FUTURE AND THAT OF THE EARTH?

CONSIDER JUST SOME OF THESE CHALLENGES FACING US./

CYBERCRIME:  "Increasingly the Internet is providing to be a dangerous place to visit.  It is a haven for  pedophiles, bullies, trolls and hackers," says the newspaper the Australian.  "Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the world. .  . The Internet provides another outlet for one of the worst traits of humankind-the capacity to be vicious and cruel."

FINANCIAL INEQUALITY: According to a recent Oxfam International report, the eight richest people own the same amount of wealth as the poorer half of humanity.  "Our broken economies," says Oxfam," Are funneling wealth to a rich elite at the expense of the poorest in society, the majority of whom are women." Some fear that the growing inequality might trigger social unrest.

CONFLICT AND PERSECUTIONS:  a 2018 United Nations Refugee Agency report said:  "We are not witnessing the highest levels of displacement on  record."  More than 68 million people have had to leave their homes, largely because of conflict or persecution.  "Nearly 1 person is forcibly  displaced every two seconds," said the report.

THREATS TO THE ENVIRONMENT:  "Biodiversity is being lost at mass-extinctions rates," states the Global Risks Report 2018, and "pollution of the air and sea has become an increasingly pressing threat to human health." Also, insect numbers are in steep decline  in some lands. Because insects pollinate plants, scientists are now warning of a potential  "ecological Armageddon." Coral reefs are in trouble too. Scientists estimate that about half the world's reefs have died in the past 30 years.

Are we able to make the changes needed for a safer and more secure world?  Some feel that educations should be a part of the answer. If so, what kind of education?  The following   articles will consider these questions.

"Let Your Kingdom Come"

Jehovah promised: 'There will be no more crying, pain, sickness, death or wars.  I will wipe away every tear from their eyes. All bad things from the pass will be forgotten.'

Jehovah put Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden to live in peace and happiness.  They were to worship their heavenly Father and fill the earth with their children. Adam and Eve disobeyed Jehovah, but his purpose never changed.  In this book we have seen that everything God promises come true.  His Kingdom will bring wonderful blessings to the earth, just as he promised Abraham.

Soon Satan, his demons, all bad people will be gone. Everyone alive will worship Jehovah.  We will not get sick or die. Instead, we will wake up each day full of energy and happy to be alive.  The earth will become a paradise. Everyone will have good food and safe homes. People will be kind, not cruel or violent. Wild animals will not fear us, and we will not be afraid of them.  We will all, animals and humans live together in peace and harmony.

It will be so exciting when Jehovah begins to resurrect people. We will welcome back people from the past, such as Abel, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Ruth, Esther, and David. They will share with us in making planet earth a paradise.  There will always be lots of interesting work to do.

Jehovah wants you to be there. You will come to know him in ways you never imagined.  Let's draw closer and closer to Jehovah every day, now and forever!

"You are worthy,Jehovah our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things." -REVELATION 4:11

"Let Your Kingdom Come" -Generation

Jesus indicated that the Kingdom will come after "this generation" has witnessed the fulfillment of the prophetic sign.

Group 1: Anointed ones who saw the beginning of the fulfillment of the sign in 1914.

Group 2: Anointed ones who were contemporaries of the first group; some of these will live to see the great tribulation.

"Will no means pass away until all these things happen."  How will these words prove true?  To answer that, we need to know two things:   the meaning both of "generation" and of "all these things." The term "generation" often refers to people of varying ages whose lives overlap during a particular period of time.  A generation is not overly long, and it comes to an end.  (Exodus 1:6) The expression "all these things" includes all the foretold events during Jesus' presence, from its beginning in 1914 until its culmination at the "great tribulation." - Matthew 24:21.

How, then, may we understand Jesus' words about "this generation"?  The generation consists of two overlapping groups of anointed ones-the first is made up  of anointed ones who saw the beginning of the fulfillment of the sign in 1914 and the second, anointed  ones who for a time were contemporaries of the first group. At least some of those  in the second group will live to see the beginning of the coming of tribulation. The two groups from one generation because their lives as anointed Christians overlapped for a time.

What may we conclude? Well, we know that the sign of Jesus' presence in Kingdom power is clearly evident around the globe. We also see that the anointed ones who are still alive and part of "this generation" are getting on in years; yet, they will not die off before the great tribulation begins.  Therefore, we can conclude that very soon indeed God's Kingdom will come and exercise its rule over the earth!  How thrilling it will be to witness the fulfillment  of the prayer that Jesus taught us:  "Let you Kingdom come"!

Note: They don't mention the other sheep.  They are the ones who believe, have faith, worship, study the Bible, follow all his laws, statutes, commandments, Bible principles, and work for him the best way you can by telling others about him. These are the ones that either have not been baptized or one who have been baptized but not by Jehovah's Witnesses.  That is what I read and understand. To what I have observed, Witness congregation in each state seems to  have some different beliefs. I don't understand this, because they are suppose to be one type of group with all the same beliefs etc.  To my understanding, this is just about what Jehovah had his/Jesus apostles write in the Bible. We are suppose to be following that.  That is the religion, not the Bibles of the other religions, they are the wolves in sheep's clothing who are leading the sheep astray.  The King James Bible is the one I read, it is where the Witnesses took their information to make the information more understood in many languages that the ancestors thousands of years ago would not let get done, also would not let Jehovah's name be in the Bible.

Let us never forget the words that Jehovah himself spoke from heaven regarding his son: "Listen to him."  As true Christians, we are eager to heed that divine direction.  We are keenly interested n everything that Jesus said and taught about God's Kingdom. What that Kingdom has already accomplished and will do in the future is the vial field of  study that will be discussed in this publication. The next chapter will examine the exciting developments that surrounded the birth of God's Kingdom in heaven.

"Let Your Kingdom Come" -When WilL God's Kingdom Come?

A few days before Jesus was put to death, four of his apostles asked him:  "What will be the sign of your presence and the conclusion of  the system of things?"  (Matthew 24:3;  Mark 13:4)  Jesus answered by relating the extensive prophecy that is recorded in Matthew chapters 24 and 25.  Jesus detailed various global events that would serve as a sign identifying a time period called  his "presence."  The start of his presence would coincide with the establishment of the Kingdom; and the culmination of his presence with the coming of the Kingdom.  We have ample proof that Jesus' prophecy has been undergoing fulfillment since 1914.  Hence, that year marked the start of his presence and the establishment of the Kingdom.

When, though, will God's Kingdom finally come? Jesus did not reveal exactly when they would happen. (Matthew 24:36) but did he say something that could assure us that it is very near indeed. Jesus indicated that the Kingdom  would come after "this generation" witnessed the fulfillment of the prophetic sign.  (Read Matthew 24:32-34.)  To whom does the expression "this generation " refer?  Let us take a closer look at Jesus' words.

"This Generation" Did Jesus have in mind unbelievers?  No.  Consider his audience. Jesus related this prophecy to a few apostles who had "approached him privately."  (Matthew 24:3)  The apostles would soon  be anointed with holy spirit.  Note also the context.  Before he spoke about "this generation,"  Jesus said:  "Now learn this illustration from the fig tree. Just as soon as its young branch grows tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near. Likewise also you, when you see all these things, know that he is at the doors."  Jesus' anointed followers-not unbelievers-would see the things he foretold and would discern their significance, namely, that Jesus "is near at the doors"  Therefore, when Jesus spoke of ""this generation" he had in mind his anointed followers.

"Let Your Kingdom Come" -The Wheat and the Weeds

Jesus indicated that the Kingdom would not be established in the first century C.E.,, despite the expectations of some of his disciples.

33 C.E. Sowing begins

'A man sowed fine seeds in his field" (Matthew 13:24)

'While men were sleeping, the enemy over-sowed  weeds' (Matthew  13:25)

"Both grew together until the harvest"  (Matthew 13:30)

The weeds are collected and bundled (Matthew 13:30)

The parable of the minas.  (Read Luke 19:11-13.)  Jesus gave this parable in 33 C.E. on his way to Jerusalem for the last time.   Some of his listeners  thought that he would set up his Kingdom as soon as he arrived in Jerusalem.  To correct that notion and to show that  the establishment of the KIngdom was yet a long way off, Jesus compared himself to "a man of noble birth" Who had to travel "to a distant land to secure kingly power."  In Jesus' case, the "the distant land" was heaven, where he could receiver power as King from his Father.  But Jesus knew that he would be installed as Messianic king immediately after his return to heaven.  Instead, he would sit at God's right hand an wait until the appointed time. As it turned out, that wait lasted for many centuries. - (Psalm 110:1, 2; Matthew 22:43, 44; Hebrews 10:13, 14.

"Let Your Kingdom Come" - When Would God's Kingdom Be Established?

Jesus indicated that the Kingdom would not be established in the first century C.E., despite the expectations of some of his disciples.  (Acts 1:6) Consider what he said in two different parables given less than two years apart.

The parable of the wheat and the weeds.   (Read Matthew 13:24-30.)   After relating this parable perhaps in the spring of 31 C.E. Jesus explained it to his disciples. (Matthew 13:36-43) Here is the gist of the parable and its meaning:  Following the death of the apostles, the Devil would sow seeds  (imitation Christians) in among wheat( "sons of the Kingdom," or anointed Christians.) Both the wheat and the weeds would be allowed to grow together during a growing season that could continue  until the harvest, which is "a conclusion of a system of things."  After the beginning of the harvest season, the weeds would be collected.  Then, the wheat would be gathered.  The parable thus indicates that the Kingdom would established, not in the first century C.E., but only after the growing season ended.  As matters worked out, the growing season ended and the harvest season began in 1914.

"Let Your Kingdom Come" - How?

Consider the model prayer. With eloquent simplicity, Jesus summed up the importance of the Kingdom, showing what it will accomplish.  That prayer consists of seven petitions.  The first three concern Jehovah's purposes-the sanctification of his name, the coming of his Kingdom, and the carrying out of his will on earth as it is in heaven.  (Read Matthew 6:9, 10.) Those three petitions are closely related.  The Messianic Kingdom is the instrument through which Jehovah will sanctify his name and carry his will.

How will God's Kingdom come?  When we pray,  "Let Your Kingdom come," we are asking that the Kingdom take decisive action.  When the Kingdom comes, it will exert it's full power toward the earth. It will remove the present wicked system of things, including all man-made governments, and bring in a righteous new world(Daniel 2:44; 2 Peter 3:13)  Then, under Kingdom rule, the entire earth will become a paradise.  (Luke 23:43)   Those in God's memory will brought back to life and reunited with their loved ones.  ( John 5:28, 29)   Obedient humans will reach perfection and enjoy endless life.  (Revelations 21:3-5)  At last, earth will be in perfect harmony with heaven, reflecting the will of Jehovah God! Do you not long to see those Bible promises come true?  Remember that every time you pray for God's Kingdom to come,  you are praying for those precious promises to be fulfilled.

It is clear that God's Kingdom has not yet "come" come to fulfill the model prayer. After all, man-made governments are still ruling and the righteous new world is not yet here.  But there is good news.  God's kingdom has been established, as we will discuss the in the next chapter.  Let us now examine what Jesus Said as to when the Kingdom would be established and when it would come.
